macnife Posted November 6, 2008 #1 Share Posted November 6, 2008 We are looking at the Pearl for an Alaska cruise. My question is can the balconies be opened up between rooms so you have one big balcony? Does NCL have any ships that allow this? Thanks for any input! starkarlis Posted November 7, 2008 #2 Share Posted November 7, 2008 We are scheduled for the Star in June in a BA room on deck 10. I am pretty sure (99%) sure there is NO door between balconies. This was one of the questions I asked as well. My MIL is on the ship in the next room and we wanted that feature too. Now if there are any balconies that do that I do not know. Probably not, especially while the ship is under way. It takes a special key and not even the stewards have that. The only time I've seen them open is when the maintenance guys were sanding and re-varnishing the rail around the outside.
brettsmom2004 Posted November 7, 2008 #4 Share Posted November 7, 2008 You can request that the partician between balconies be opened up if the other cabin agrees to it.....Yes, it can be done.....
starkarlis Posted November 9, 2008 #5 Share Posted November 9, 2008 Great news!!! My mil has the room next to us and we were told that we could only open the door between the rooms, nothing about a door on the balcony!
Diana68 Posted November 9, 2008 #6 Share Posted November 9, 2008 I don't know about the Star, but the Pearl has the doors between balconies. That said, we really didn't get to benefit from the door. At embarkation we asked our room steward to unlock the door. He got the key and unlocked it, but then told us that he would need to come and lock it before sail away. We were told that the door between the balconies could only be opened while in port. Since we were off the ship on port days, we never had him unlock it again. Since we were off the ship on port days, we never had him unlock it again. We had the exact same experience on the Pearl this last Sept. But 2 years ago on the Star, they did open the door and leave it open the whole cruise. The doors on the Pearl were much heavier, I don't know if this made a difference or not. Our steward told us they had to be locked while cruising so they didn't crash around. So someone on the Star more recently maybe will have an updated report on that ship.
