Philly Steve Posted November 11, 2008 #1 Share Posted November 11, 2008 I'd love to see CCL utilize the Philadelphia Cruise Ship terminal and there are a couple of developments that make me wonder if it could come true. Yesterday, Carnival hosted a PR stunt in Philadelphia featuring the "world's largest pinata." The 61-foot tall, 60-foot long donkey pinata was loaded with candy and used in the filming of a TV commercial. http://carnival-news.com/ Also, I see that CCL posted a recent job opening for a business development manager for Philadelphia and south Jersey. http://careers.vurvexpress.com/jobprofile.cfm?szWID=10536&szCID=47414&szSiteID=227&rss=0&szOrderID=535069 Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but has anyone heard anything about CCL plans for Philly?
yst347 Posted November 11, 2008 #2 Share Posted November 11, 2008 Didn't the Carnival Legend sail some Bermuda itineraries from Philadelphia a few years back? My first cruise was on a ship now rusting away in Philadelphia, the SS United States. She was a fantastic vessel. It breaks my heart to see her dying in the Delaware. :(
marniegirl Posted November 11, 2008 #3 Share Posted November 11, 2008 Hey Philly Steve! My kids have photos of that pinata from the parade route honoring the Phillies win!! I believe that the publicity stunt was just to bring attention to the fact that you can cruise out of Philly. Not too sure they go anywhere other than Bermuda right now. It would be great if they offered more cruises other than that, as airfare is a big $$$ drain. We'll be keeping our eye on this as it certainly would be a luxury to be able to depart sooo close to home.

I drive by her every so often and dream about her return to sea. Hey Philly Steve! My kids have photos of that pinata from the parade route honoring the Phillies win!! Philly Steve Posted November 11, 2008 Author #5 Share Posted November 11, 2008 I also saw this Philly web ad for dancers and entertainers but it may just be part of a national call. http://philadelphia.backpage.com/Auditions/carnival_cruise_lines/classifieds/ViewAd?oid=1018624
Mommy40 Posted November 11, 2008 #6 Share Posted November 11, 2008 I thought the publicity event was to promote that they are cruising out of Baltimore? Kind of weird that they had in Philly.
halos Posted November 11, 2008 #7 Share Posted November 11, 2008 I think it would be awesome if they put a ship there. Carnival should seriously start having some northern ports and do some good repositioning cruises like NCL. I'd jump on those in a heartbeat! slotaddict Posted November 14, 2008 #12 Share Posted November 14, 2008 The only problem with ships going out of Philly is that the fares are much higher. The reason being it takes the ship so long to get out of the Delaware Bay into the Ocean. Because of that none of the shops or casino can open, so the fares stay higher because they lose all of that onboard money. We did sail out Philly one time on Celebrity, it was very nice and the cruise terminal was nice and well organized.

Philly Steve Posted November 18, 2008 Author #14 Share Posted November 18, 2008 Seems we'll have to wait for any Carnival service out of Philadelphia. My contact in the CCL Press Office says the line has no plans, at this time to offer service from the Philadelphia Cruise Ship Terminal. She cites the size of their ships which are too big to clear the bridges. While a few CCL ships might be able to cruise out of Philly, they are currently serving other needs. However, she tells me CCL does plan to offer service out of Baltimore next spring. The job opening for a Philly-South Jersey Sales Manager was for a position that works with travel agents. The talent call was part of a nationwide appeal for dancers and singers. Maybe we'll see CCL service in Philly, but not anytime soon. Philly CCL fans should continue to express interest in luring the line here. :)
