Opera & Jet Lag

I will be arriving Sydney 8:30 am from US. Do you think it would be too much to go to an opera at 1:00 PM same day? I'm not a huge opera fan, but thought it would be fun to actually go to an opera in the Opera House. It would be my only opportunity while in Sydney.

I think you might be better to do it in the evening. In my experience mid-afternoon is the worst time for jetlag. Its like going into the twilight zone. If you go in the evening you could have a little kip before you go.

Each person is different, but given the adjustment to time lag it's not something I would attempt. Unless you're hoping it will help you sleep!

 

You may well be able to stay up, but there's a fair chance you will be tired and your body trying to adjust to time zones, and given that you'll be in mostly darkness and relaxing for the performance, I'd say there's a good chance your body will try to adopt to its cues.

Coming over from the U.S. is not nearly as bad as returning back. I am sure you will be fine for a 1pm matinee. When you first arrive, get yourself out into the fresh air and try and get some sunshine. That is the best way to beat jetlag. Have an early dinner after the Opera and go to bed even if it is at 6.3pm.

 

You will find next day you will be back to normal. The worst thing you can do is to lie down on arrival and go to sleep. You need to get your bodyclock adjusted to the new time zone.

 

We have travelled extensively over the past 14 or so years and this has worked for us each time especially in Europe when we arrive at 7am or earlier from Australia after a 26hour plus flight. It is so much harder flying from East to West which is what we have to do on the return journey.
