Live onboard QM2 11-21-2008

I have just returned from the eastbound leg of the Tandem Crossing. On that voyage smoking policies inside were as follows:

No smoking Commodore Club anymore, or the Chart Room....there is a designated small area in Golden Lion but smoking is not allowed there during the lunch period, I believe it was 12-3PM. Smoking in G-32 on the port side upper level and anywhere in the Casino. (they will hold one non smoking night). On deck there are designated areas as well and they will be posted in your daily programme. Smoking was still permitted in one's cabin.

For those of us who do smoke, Churchill's ( starboard side just off the Commodore Club) has become quite the happening place at night. There was always lively conversation and an interesting camaraderie. It reminded many of us of what it must have been like in the smoking rooms onboard the ship of old. Easy to pop in and out of the Commodore and enjoy both places.

Hope this helps....

Cheers, Penny

November 10,2007...the “Affair” continued...did it ever!

October 16,2008...the “Affair” goes transatlantic as we sail in tandem with the grand QE2 on her final transatlantic voyage...what a thrill!

December 9, 2008....the “Affair” resumes again....Life is good!

August 7, 2009....the “Affair” goes on...this time “home” to Norway

Penny,

Your response tallies with my recollection from last Xmas on QM2. However, I had the following reply from Cunard "smoking is restricted to Churchill's Cigar Lounge and the Empire Casino. All other public areas are non smoking".

This worries me, as we intend to travel on QM2 again this Xmas but won't if we can't smoke in the small area of the Golden Lion (around the corner from the main bar area) or upstairs in G32.

Can you set my mind at rest. Many Thanks.

Tim,

Live from the QM2, can you confirm smoking policies in Golden Lion and upstairs in G32. Many Thanks.

Regards

Jim

Hopefully Tim will confirm this, but my understanding from someone who was recently on QM2, is smoking is allowed in Cabins, balcony, Churchills, Casino, Golden Lion,(except during lunch)deck 8 aft, anywhere outside, G32 disco--port side upstairs, and way in the back of the Queens Grill Lounge. There will also likely be a non smoking night in the casino.

The question is, has Cunard changed any of these areas since the dry dock.

I'm not Tim--But-- I recently e-mailed Cunard and they sent a complete cost brakedown.

Pkg. are available --discounts to world club gold, plat. and diamond.

$.75/min on pay-as-you go.

26 self serv computors on board in 3 locations.

wireless is available in most public areas and statrooms.

we are sailing on the QM2--3Jan09

Hope this helps.

Could you either forward the email from Cunard or reply on this thread again as to what packages are available if you are not at the gold, plat, or diamond level. If you want to just forward the email, let me know & I'll give you an email address.

We were onboard for the TA crossing directly before dry dock and were told by an officer that post dry dock smoking would only be allowed in Churchills or the casino, but also in cabins and balconies. No more smoking allowed in golden lion pub or G32.

Jim....the information I stated was from the Tandem TA in Oct, the last before the refit. It comes straight from the daily programme. However, I don't know what might have changed since the refit. I'd forgotten that small area at the back of QG Lounge Marle...thanks.

Outside there are restrictions too....only on the starboard side of the aft end on Decks 8, 11 and 12. Smoking is allowed on Deck 7 aft under the clock only. The bartender at the Terrace Bar had ashtrays at the far end on the bar and allowed me to smoke there but there wasn't anyone else there at the time on a chilly day.

I'll be on in 2 weeks again and will be interested to see what other changes might have occured.

Cheers, Penny

The page Cunard sent me is intitled 'COMPUTERS' QM2. I do not have the org. e-mail.

They do not list any package other then the club tiers I mentioned; only $.75 per min. pay-as-you -go.

I suggest you e-mail Cunard and request the info you are seeking--they responded the next day.

Cost of printing is $.50/page(printers are located in each area):o

Sorry! I can't be of more help.

Think this clears up the Smoking debate.

From someone on board.

Greetings from QM2. Ship and crew are wonderful, and service has been the best ever.

BUT, the refit changes are not good. The Chart Room is terrible. They have replaced all of the furniture with large, overstuffed chairs and sofas, and added a row in the middle. It has lost all of its elegance, in my opinion.

The interactive tv system is gone (but same chunky tvs). So, no in-room e-mail. They do rent laptops if you buy a package (supposedly and hopefully free for Platinum), but the system isn't really working. They installed wifi in the cabins, but it's spotty at best. They are working on it though. The QM2 e-mail address you had is now $3.95 per incoming or outgoing.

Smoking is all but banned. A few spots on the outer deck (where it's the most windy), 4 tables in Golden Lion, 3 in Queens Room Grill, and one tiny portion in G32. Smoking still allowed in cabins. I'll try and post some pics of Chart Room when I get back next week, but it's awful, just awful.

Thank you for this. Since that website link is blocked out, could you perhaps ask about smoking outside? Still allowed on deck 8 aft at the pool for example?

Thanks so much~
