Information on Cyprus

Recommended Posts

Firstly I must stress that I haven't been yet, but am preparing for a future visit. There isn't a great deal on these boards. From what I have read there is little to do in the town itself. There is a tourist information point by the port which will give you some transport/shared taxi options.

We only have a shortish port stop, 8 until 2, so are a little limited. There are castles, beaches, a waterpark, wineries, ruins, picturesque villages (?Omodos) and mountains. I was considering hiring a car, buying a road map & just going where the whim takes us. (I believe they drive on the left..which of course suits us. :D)

I have boomarked this site which offers port pickup & collection, but of course there may be others...I'm still researching this at the moment.

Hmmm..that reminds me, I did find a site with a good tourist map which I thought I had bookmarked. I seem to have lost it. I'll come back with it if I can unearth it.

We were in Cyprus (Limassol) on a port day from 7 a.m. - 2 p.m. last month and went to Pathos (a lovely harbour town with an Archaeological Site containing Roman ruins of Villas....famous for it's well preserved, beautiful mosaic floors). We went with Shuttle & Express (I brought the post in Sparky's post above http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showpost.php?p=13223272&postcount=230, which gives a good description of the options available at the port, and this particular company.)

Shuttle and Express picked us up within 10 minutes of calling them (the person in the TI at the port called for us) ... we were on our way by 8:10. The drive there gave us a good view of some of Cyprus ... its dry and hilly, but scenic...and at times we had nice views of the coastline. Since Shuttle & Express is a shared taxi service, they will pick up others along the way ... we had 4 in our van ... and the trip took approx. 1 hr 15 min. The driver told us he would pick us up again at 11:45, giving us just over 2 hours to spend in Pathos... most of which we spent at the Archaeological Site (right next to the harbour ... wonderful views of the coastline and water from the site.)

After waiting until noon for S&E:( we gave up on them and took a taxi back to the port (S&E was Є10 each, the taxi was Є65) ... a much faster ride back (45 minutes) in a Mercedes car.... & back at the port with almost an hour to spare before sailing.

Despite the travel glitch, we agreed that it was well worth the unexpected expense because we really enjoyed going to Pathos.

We have been to Cyprus three times for one or two week vacations. If you can rent a car at the port that would be my recommendation. There isn't that much to do in Limassol so head towards Pafos (Paphos) on the coast road and call at Kourion to visit the remains of the Roman town. Continue to Aphrodite's Rock and then on to Pafos for lunch by the harbour. The Roman mosaics and the Tombs of the Kings are must sees in the town.

The journey back to Limassol is about 40 mins along the motorway.

We were there on a Sunday in September. We could never find much information, and since we had done so much in the other ports, we simply walked off, through the terminal, caught a public bus for about 1 Euro, and rode 10 minutes to the "old port". (this is where ship shuttle was dropping people off and charging $10). We found some nice shops with very reasonable prices for souveniers. We had a nice relaxing lunch in a tavern. We also walked along the sea-front promenade where they were having a festival. It turned out to be a nice relaxing visit. Most of the people who took "tours" were disappointed. We had planned to visit a local brewery/distillery, but it was not open on Sunday.

I haven't done a ships tour in Cyprus, but I have been on several land based vacations there.

There are some really beautiful spots on the island. If you can I would recommend renting a car for the day.

Some of my favourite plaves which are quite easily accessable form Limassol are -

*The Troodos mountains area - more info here http://www.kypros.org/Cyprus/troodos.html

* Kourion - 19km weat of Limassol

* Birthplace of Aphrodite (Petra Tou Romiou) - beautiful spot for a walk along the coast
