Smoking on MSC ships

Since these ships cater to Europeans, would smoking be an issue. I am allergic to smoke,and don't mind if there are some designated places for smoking. but if it is allowed everywhere that would be problem,

 

Anyone know?

There is no smoking allowed in staterooms or balconies, and a fine will be imposed if the smoking rules are not followed. This, according to my TA.

 

If the rules are enforced is another thing....

 

Over on the X board, on the new Solstice, one person reported that someone is smoking on the balcony next to hers, and the no smoking rule is not enforced. Celebrity has the same smoking rule as MSC.

There is also no smoking in the restaurants and only permitted in designated areas. It used to be practically half the ship with one side of a bar being non smoking and the other being smoking. However since various European countries started implementing smoking bans, this has been restriceted to very few of the bars and lounges with the remainder of inside areas being non smoking. Smoking is permitted on the open decks. depending on where you are considering cruising with MSC, you are likely to find more smokers onboard if the cruise is in Europe and less if it's in the Caribbean. I'm not allergic to smoke but I don't like it and it can affect my asthma if there is a lot. Howeever on the whole I mange to avoid it on MSC ships. Sometimes the stairs beside the entrance to the smokers pub can be a bit smoky, but you can easily use another staircase to avoid it. Smoking areas are published in the Programme.

I am somewhat upset about smoking ban for balconys ... I understand ban for inside areas, but balconys.:(

The problem is that the balcony next door down wind from you gets all the smoke plus there is always a risk of fire when balcony smokers flick their ashes and buts over the side. They can land on another balcony which just might have an open door.........

 

I do understand, I finally decided to quit smoking because it was getting too complicated and wasn't any fun anymore.

On my Caribbean voyage on Lirica last winter smoking was not an irritation.

They are struct about anything being tossed over the side (including cigarette butts). Its part of their envirnmental policy to minimise polution of the sea., However I do agree, thst the main reason will be the fire hazard as this is probably one of the greatest dangers whilst at sea (over than colliding with an iceberg!)

Just came back from 10 day cruise on 12/13 and smoking is allowed in the cabins but definitely not on balconies. The cabin steward told us to get our ash tray from the bar and kept it clean and empty every time he came in to service the room. The rules actually read that smoking is strongly discouraged in the cabins, but definitely not prohibited. There is open space on 12 near the disco and on the port side of deck 6 where outside smoking is ok as well as by the pool on 11 port side.

 

Inside smoking is allowed of course in the casino. It is also allowed in the Lord Nelson Pub on deck 5.

 

Great over all experience. Cleanest ship ever out of our 35 cruises we have ever been on in.

 

Remember that they are a foreign company and therefore should not be compared to the US based product.

 

Many people were repeats on board. We met folks that were on their 8th repeat cruise!

The info I received from my TA states that there is no smoking in cabins or balcony (on the Orchestra) There will be a fine (I believe it was around $250) to clean the cabin if found smoking there.

Perhaps, the room attendant, was trying to accomodate the smokers?

That was me. The person received a warning from the cabin steward the first time they did it. We hadn't even left port and they were already lit up on their balcony. The last day of the cruise, they figured they'd get away with it. They had a fine imposed (either $250 or $500, I'm not sure). I'm with the OP, both my wife and I have alergies and refrain from smokey areas as much as possible, however we do honor a persons right to smoke. Adherance to the rules and proper enforcement are the keys.
