Destiny 11/22 Missed Port in Ocho Rios???

If I fly to Denver and can't land there, the plane is diverted to Dallas and I can't leave that day, the airline will put me up and give me something to eat - and send me to Denver the following day...so I don't really get the airline comparison...yes I'll arrive a day late but at least the airline attempts to compensate/make me comfortable for my loss...

Sorry to say, but once again, you're wrong.

If your flight is cancelled or delayed because of weather, you are NOT entitled to a hotel and you are NOT entitled to meals either. For a weather delay or cancellation, the airline can CHOOSE to give you some sort of compensation (meal vouchers, etc) but they are NOT required to.

If your flight was cancelled due to something that the airline has control of (mechanical problems, staffing, etc), THEN you would be entitled to some compensation.

On the same token, you're NOT entitled to further compensation from the cruise line if a port is missed due to weather. However, the cruise line can CHOOSE to give you compensation (read $20 OBC), but don't expect much more.

Finally, when you buy an airline ticket, you're purchasing a ticket from point A to point B, but the airline doesn't guarantee the routing or even the times!

Similarly, when you buy a cruise ticket, you're purchasing a ticket starting at point A and ending at point B, (many times A and B being the same), but the cruise line doesn't guarantee the routing (ports of call) either!

Just a question or two for the OP:

Were you on the bridge?

Did you have ALL of the information and breifings that the bridge crew did?

Are you a master of 100,000+ ton ship?

If the captain decides it unsafe to attempt to dock the ship, you can bet there is a good reason for it, and it probably isn't appearent to the average pax. As far as the $20.00 OBC goes, you were refunded the port charges you paid for this paticular port.

It is always diapointing to miss a port you were really looking forward to visit, but I would rather miss a port and be safe than trying to dock in usafe cnditions.

I know what the policy states about missed ports/alternative ports...

So you know what the policy states and yet you're still asking for something?

If you think another line would handle a weather-related situation differently, by all means go ahead. I guarantee you that the fans of all the other lines on this board are going to tell you the same thing we're telling you if you miss a port on their line. Like someone else said, if you're only going to sail the line that offers "big" bucks for a missed port, your cruising days are over.

Oh, BTW, if you do find a line that would attempt to dock in those conditions, please let me know. THAT'S the one I will avoid in the future.

Just returned from 5 day sailing on Destiny...The ship is old but ok for the most part. Dining room food was good...buffet was bland and other options were just ok...

About to turn into Ocho and the Captain decided he didn't want to go due to high winds and waves, so we just sailed on to Grand Cayman. The ship offered everyone a $20 credit, big deal. Overall the cruise was pretty good, service was very good. However, the amount of cash I spent on-board not going to Ocho was well worth it for Carnival and the $20 is almost insulting. Since returning home I asked for a credit for a future cruise and was told, no. So, while I probably would have cruised with Carnival again (this was our first) I'll probably look elsewhere.

Having spent thousands on 2 balcony cabins and at least another grand at the bars, spa and casino...They do better, by making a quick decision not to go into port - from a financial standpoint it's better for them - they could have at least opened the bars for a couple of hours...

Anyway I'll look to RCCL and or NCL before rushing on my next Carnival cruise...anyone have any thoughts on a better way to get a credit for next time?

I think the reason for not going to Jamaica was to make sure the ship and the pax and crew are safe.

They don't decide by figuring out how much more you'll spend onboard.

You won't get much more from any cruise lines for missed ports but you are more than willing to give it a try with some other line.

I'm going to Jamaica in January and I'm hoping we don't make it.

Bill

I say never cruise with Carnival again. I'd be really upset if they were looking out for my safety too. How cares if the ship due to winds runs aground or rams the pier. Damnit....I wanted to go to the worst possible island in the Caribbean there is.

I'd pay Carnival $20 to miss this port if I were on the ship.

I say go to RCCL and NCL and when they do the same things in the same conditions you might want to do a land vacation.

By the way...In your docs it clearly states that if a port is missed you get 20 bucks whether you book a $2000 cabin or a $500 cabin.....;)

ZQVOL - What a dumb thing to say...I guess the people who've responded are either Carnival employees or work for the govt. or a non-profit...it's plain and simple...bad business!!!

Again I'm not trying to burn carnival here...I've said three or four times...I enjoyed the cruise...I'm just talking smart business here...

Don't you think if Carnival sent a letter apologizing for missing port and offers all passengers a 20 or 25% discount on their next cruise if they booked the same cabin or higher they'd do good by that?

Why should they when they can't control the weather?

BTW: no airline will compensate you if they are diverted because f bad weather. Read their contract.

Here is from carnivals website. It doesnt say the $20 credit is for port taxes. To the OP, it seems lucky, you got the $20 obc and a new port. lucky you :D

Port Cancellation Policy

If Carnival Cruise Lines ("Carnival") has adequate notice prior to sailing that a vessel will deviate from the published itinerary, it will promptly -- upon making the itinerary change -- notify guests of the change through their travel agents or directly, in the case of a direct booking ("the Notice"). The Notice shall offer guests an opportunity to cancel their booking without penalty within 24 hours of the delivery of the Notice. Carnival shall not be liable to guests for any charges, fees or expenses paid or owed to third parties (such as air travel booked by a guest directly with an airline) in connection with a cancelled booking or substituted port. In the event a guest does not cancel his or her cruise on a timely basis, no additional compensation for the itinerary change will be offered to the guest at a later time.

In the event the itinerary change becomes necessary while the ship is at sea or when notice prior to sailing is not feasible, Carnival shall attempt to substitute an alternative port. Carnival shall promptly provide written notice of the itinerary change to the guests as well as announcing the change in the Carnival Capers and via the public address system. No compensation shall be provided to guests when an alternative port is offered.

If safety, scheduling or other concerns prevent the ship from calling on an alternative port, Carnival shall promptly provide written notice of the elimination of the scheduled port to the guests as well as announcing the change in the Carnival Capers and via the public address system. The written notice shall also offer a shipboard credit of $20.00 (U.S.D.) per person to be reflected on the sail and sign account.

Nothing herein shall affect the guest's ability to exercise the Vacation Guarantee on sailings where it applies.

I am REALLY hoping to miss Progreso on my Ecstasy cruise next year. How awesome would it be to miss Progreso AND get a $20/pp credit???

Of course, they can replace it with Costa Maya and I will be one happy camper also!

But somehow carnival went beyond their own policy, and gave the OP the $20 OBC and a new port. I'm sure OP wont see it that way, but they went above what they are required according to their own policy

Although I agree with everyone that the OP doesn't have a leg to stand on, I find the lecturing and pontificating disgusting. He made his points and wasn't obnoxious, though maybe misinformed. Then the know it all's descend and attack. Good grief........

Man, if you see lecturing in this thread, you should try some of the tips, fuel or dressing for dinner threads. You would really be disgusted. Anything I might have typed was for info or comedic purposes, I had no intent to pontificate:D.

I wasn't pontificating on one specific pontificator. I was just commenting on the the general pontification that goes on here on a daily basis. It gets repetitive and needless in my opinion.

I find your pontification about other pontificaters questionable, and I will ponder whether I will pontificate in the future :D. I think you might consider your pondering also ;)

Where did he say he got a new port? The original itin of this cruise is Ocho Rios and Grand Cayman. So they skipped OR and just went on to the next scheduled port instead.

Well heck, see what happens when you pontificate about something when you really dont understand. I assumed, and you know what that means. I guess GC was OPs already scheduled port, and not inplace of the missed port. *Bangs head on desk*

Who would've thought pontification could be so dangerous? :D ;)

I was on the Triumph last week, and our boat was rocking, those winds were pretty bad that week, most days the upper decks were closed as well on the ship and the waves were crashing against the side of the ship.

While in Cayman Islands, we couldn't tender where we were suppose to tender and our CD said that 7 boats were turned away that day because it was unsafe to tender the boats where they usually did. We also ran into some people who were on the Conquest and they missed Jamaica as well because of the high winds. The Conquest could of missed 2 ports that week if they hadn't secured a spot in Grand Cayman, that's the price you pay with cruising, you take chances when unforeseen things happen

OOOO please let me jump in on this one as well. Let me start by saying that this was my first cruise......btw had a FABULOUS time!!!! Yes the itinerary was Ocho Rios and Grand Cayman. (So we did not get an extra port.) Sunday the waters were so rough I think almost everyone was suffering from motion sickness, poor dh had to miss his lobster dinner bc he was not feeling well, but once room service brought him some magic pills (can't remember what kind they were- too many drinks lol) he was able to see the shows for the evening- yippy! Anyways, yes, we were disappointed that we were unable to port in Ocho Rios, BUT had the most respect for the captain and his decision. We had plenty to do on the ship. In fact I was kinda excited that we got an onboard credit- u read so much about ppl getting obc that now I can FINALLY say--- I got an OBC!! No seriously, disappointed- yes, let it ruin my cruise- not a chance!!!! So I took my OBC and found a seat at a slot machine and came out a little ahead- main thing I had FUN! Oh and it was MY CHOICE to use it in a slot machine! So bottom line- will I cruise with Carnival again?? You betcha I will!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just my 2 cents ;)

Destiny 2008- Hooked!!!! OBTW- Jorge, I looov u!!!!!!! lol

Last January aboard the Destiny, the Captain made several approaches to the dock (St. Kitts), then turned away due to strong cross winds. No doubt in my mind that he made the right decision. We were given the $20 per person OBC, and credit for the shore excursion we had purchased through Carnival. Would have loved to see the Island, but not willing to take the risk weather conditions were wrong. There was a group on board that had a wedding planned on St. Kitts during our time there - those plans went South in a hurry. Don't know what they ended up doing. Sorry you missed one of your stops. Don't give up on Carnival - they were probably only looking out for your safety and the safety of the ship.
