We'd like to be able to keep in touch with our young teen on the Solstice. Will verison texting work (it's free... hence we do it a alot)? Thanks

NOT free. 50 cents a text message while using the ships cell service. When they turn the tower off while in port you are using what ever plan you have with Verizon.

I appreciate the info about texting. How can we stay in contact- buy/ rent walkie talkies?

I would recommend buying walkie-talkies. This would be a good time to buy since you probably can get some good sale prices. We have used them on several cruises and they work quite well for keeping in touch.

We have used walkie-talkies on the ship and they work fairly well. Sometimes you lose the signal, probably due to all of that metal on the ship.

 

If you do use walkie-talkies, please be aware that they can be a real annoyance to those around you. Keep the "beeper" turned down low, and as with cell phones, talk quietly. I find that many people aren't quite as tolerant of this type of noise on a ship as they would be of a cell phone at home because they're trying to get away from all that clatter.

Also be aware that others using walkie talkies on the ship could be sharing your frequency - so do not assume your conversations are private.
