question about excursion Grand Cayman

Recommended Posts

We are going to be on the Mariner (5/9-5/16). I reserved a excursion through Capt Marvin's and we need to be there by 9:15.

Our ship does not arrive in port until 8am. Does anyone know if an 1hr is enough time to make it to Capt Marvin's from our ship??? I am kinda freaking out that we won't make it.????

Thanks

Tracy

Just be sure to get on line as early as possible to get on the tender to go ashore. The tender ride is a few minutes and it is about a 5/10 minute walk to Captain Marvins office.

We just returned yesterday from the Rhapsody. We turned away from Grand Cayman about 4 hrs before we were supposed to get there. The port closed to all the big ships. We found out that the smaller carnival ships were able to go though. The people that we talked to on Voyager were even more upset the only place they got to go to was Cozumel. All the other ports were cancelled. What are you going to do?

I call GC the 50/50 Port. You got just as much chance of getting off there as not. I'm sure the odds are higher but on your ship in your week it's a 50/50. Do what you got to do to be first tenders in as it does take 10 to 30 min. to get there. It may be a 5 to 10 min. ride but you have to allow the time for the tender to fill up so you could sit there 15 min. All the shore excursion people know when you are coming or not or if you are late so they would wait if you are on a list. Just don't waste time getting there, allow the extras time. You can walk around in the area if you arrive early but arrive late they will leave you.

We got to Capt. Marvins in plenty of time, only to realize that their time was an hour behind the ships clock time. As you get off the tender, you'll walk to the left a couple of blocks (if that much). You'll see a yellow building on the right hand side that says "Captain Marvins". Everyone there was totally awesome. After our excursion they gave us a free rum cake for every adult booking.

So is what you are saying 2VaCruzers...is that there is a time change...so we might have an extra hour? What time of year did you go? Was is daylight savings time? Does that even make a difference?

We just went the beginning of April..in fact, we had to "spring ahead" the 2nd day of our cruise. So Cayman was an hour behind us. So we actually didn't have to rush as much as we did. The daily compass warns you to keep your watches on ship time, not island time. We totally forgot about that when we tendered in.

Time Change warning! Some ships choose to change the ships time with local port times while other ships do not change and stay on the time you left on. Be aware of what your ship is doing and adjust accordingly and ask questions like: the time to go ashore is on which time? And the time to return is on which time? Because many have gone to local bars and after a few drinks look at the bars clock to say we have another hour so pour me another one. As your drink is being poured your ship is pulling away. This is not a joke. It does happen a lot. The ship will leave you.

In Cayman- I am ALWAYS at the tender location an HOUR before posted. It is vitally necessary to be in the first tender if you are an independent traveler and don't want long waits. I have always gotten the first tender using this approach.

When we were on NOS, they were very vocal about us staying on ship time always!! It was also mentioned in the compass. Of course, then when you are in town, you have to be constantly aware that your watch is an hour ahead....but when it comes to missing the ship, being an hour ahead is a good thing!!

My family and I went to Grand Cayman 4/12-4/18 and stayed in a condo on 7 mile beach. Wednesday, the water was so rough that I made my 10 year old daughter stick to the pool for the most part because she is not a strong swimmer and the conditions seemed dangerous for swimming. A couple of ships were able to get in on Wednesday and Thursday, but only a couple. Apparently, there is an alternate place for ships to anchor, but the number is limited. I saw several large ships bypass Cayman. I knew people would be disappointed, but the water was truly very very rough. Friday and Saturday, it barely lapped the shore. You just never know with Cayman, I guess.
