formal night question

Recommended Posts

I have lived on LI for over 30 years (and NYC before that) and go to at least one or more weddings a year and owned a bridal shop. All weddings in catering halls here ARE formal and semi formal (which means suits and at least cocktail dresses) and that represents about 80% of the weddings around here. Not the backyard ones or the one in the Knights of columbus, and even those are more formal than not. In fact weddings here are the most elaborate and costly ones anywhere. No one brings anything but CASH ( or checks) as presents to the weddings (well maybe a few).I do not know what planet you live on, but not this one .

And I've stated on these boards several times that the RCCL wine list is rather pathetic. I'll be bringing my own, and gladly paying the corkage fee.

This has gotten way out of hand with all of the back and forth between those of you that are torching each other to death on an hourly basis. Formal night means formal night. Follow what is suggested by your cruise line. On my first cruise in 1997 I wasn't too thrilled about getting into a suit and tie, especially since that is what I wore, and still do, to work every day. It seemed like a big pain to get "dressed up" for dinner the first time around. Since the I have been on 6 cruises and now have come to appreciate it. My DW and I enjoy it since we don't often get out as often as we'd like. To make a long posting short (and I know it is kind of late for that) if you don't want to dress up, don't go to the formal dining room, and by all means, get a life and stop posting your trivial gripes against each other on this thread. The formal dining room is not a place to express your "if it feels good, do it" attitude. Take that and your causual attire to the Windjammer.

Glad to see you get it. Now if you can convince those 10% that don't read these boards to understand how simple you made it then we have won and the dress code busters have lost. It really is as simple as you put it. Book the cruise, get your ticket documents, read them, pack accordingly and go and enjoy your cruise. And don't worry about which night is formal, they will remind you the night before and another reminder of what to wear and what not to wear. Make your choice to do the dress up or eat elsewhere. How much more simpler do you need it than that?

Gisi was just asking for people's opinion on whether she would be overdressed. Only 3 people were able to voice theirs before T.Seago told her not to listen to anyone. I feel she should have let people give Gisi their opinion (she already gave hers) and let Gisi decide. Besides, no one was telling her to go in a long sequined gown and her husband to wear a tux--only that they would not be overdressed.

Formal doesn't necessarily entail a long dress, so yes, she can still feel comfortable in a short dress and still be dressy in a nice cocktail dress.

Formal night is not a thing from days-gone-by, only people's attitude towards it. Yes, I am in the older set--going by the calendar not by how I feel. However, my kids are pre-teens (even younger than T.Seago) and they love dressing up--even on our Disney Cruise. They'll even go more dressed up this year. I'll go comfortable in nice dress pant sets.

As a certified mom and cruiser, I say let's give it a rest and behave. Some of you are touting your education, yet your behavior is not commensurate to it. I hope I don't behave like that when I get my degree.

P.S. to T.Seago: I saw nothing in any of your posts that would lead me to believe that you are a "GENIUS."

I sure hope I didn't misspell anything.

I will be leaving on NOS next Sat, this will be my first cruise. Someone at my job, who has cruised before is telling me that for formal night few of the people actually wear suits & tuxes / long dresses for the women. I was planning on wearing long dresses (like what you would wear to a wedding) and suits for my hubby. Would we bee overdressed????
thanks
Hi Gisi!
Don't listen to these people...I have cruised 3 times and I am going again (to Alaska) next year.

I am also a certified travel agent. Formal Night is a thing from days-gone-by. While there are people that still dress up to the nines, a lot of people just go casually. My man never even brings a tie.

If you would like to go big one night, do that. Otherwise, don't make yourself rushed and uncomfortable for both nights...it isn't worth it.

I also don't recommend jeans or anythink that casual but be comforatable.

You will thank me and the GENIUS you work with.
