Drink Coupons 101

Can somebody explain to me the benefit of buying drink coupons ahead of time? (other than the obvious less sticker shock on the bar bill at week's end)

I don't quite understand how they work. You get 4 for $21.25. ($5.25 ea)

what do the DOD's cost? If one coupon does not cover the cost of your drink do you use two and get credit on the balance?

The only benfit that I see is that they incldue the 15% gratuity. Which I guess would knock almost a buck off of a $6.00 drink

I used them on my recent cruise. Can't remember the cost of the DOD but was always charged something when I ordered a DOD refill in my glass. Cost varied from less than a dollar to almost two dollars. I think it would just depend on the bartender.

I would order a miami vice as a refill in my souvenir glass and would not be charged extra, just the coupon.

I like the coupons.

ihatesnow - As stated, these were intended as gifts, but many use them for "money management". If the drink is more than the coupon the server is supposed to ask for your S&S card to charge the difference - some servers don't (then the coupons are a good deal) and some do (then the coupons may not be a good deal). We found them to be a nuisance. ken

I use them... cant figure out how they would be a nuisance. Order drink(regular glass not souvenier glass mind you).. give ticket... drink drink. No big sail and sign bill at end of cruise. Nuisance must be in wearing something with pockets to carry them in.

Yes...sorta...they have collapsable cooler packages with hats that you can buy online...or you can take a bucket back to your room from the lido...LOL

Bought them for ourselves & didn't care for them - if drink cost is more, we got charged the diff. If got something for less than coupon, you didn't get credit. I found when I wanted a drink when sitting by the pool, I had no pockets to carry coupons so didn't have them available. Same when just walking around the ship - a lot of my shorts/pants don't have pockets.

With S&S card I get punched with a hole in casino, or usually bring a hole puncher with me & lanyards or beaded type chains for everyone in our group. That way I always have the S&S around my neck. If you want to keep bill down, put the $ aside that you would have bought the coupons with & put it against your account when you get on the ship, then anything over can go on your credit card. I have gotten the coupons from my kids as a gift & it was a sweet idea, just found them inconvenient though.

We use them on every cruise and have never been charged the difference even though the drink cost more. Also you have to carry you S&S some where so carrying the coupons is not big deal. I carry my S&S in a lanyard with a plastic pouch and put the coupons in with them. Or I always carry a pool bag (book, sunscreen ect) and I could carry them that way.

These coupons save you because it also includes the 15% tip. Do the math. Cost you $5.30 per coupon. You can get a drink up to $5.25 plus it includes the 15% tip ($6.04 total). I looked at the drink list and didn't see any drinks less than $4.75, most were $5.00 or higher, including beer. Even if the drink costs $4.75 with the 15% tip the total comes to $5.46. Again, it's not a huge savings but I calculated most drinks I would buy would save me $0.73 per drink. With the # of drinks we'll consume per day, it will definitely add up. Do I plan to use only coupons? Nope - but it will be nice to have some of my bar bill paid for in advance. That's just my opinion.....
