The fantasy world of MSC Fantasia

20/12/2008

Apart from its ground-breaking environmental features, MSC Cruises’ new €550m flagship boasts many innovative and unique features in a refined decor of warm tones, coloured marbles, mosaics, glass works and sculptures - conceived, as with all MSC newbuilds, by Genoa-based De Jorio Design International with supervision by Rafaela Aponte, the shipowner’s wife.

The new MSC Yacht Club, an exclusive area with 99 luxurious suites, butler and concierge service, private Top Sail Lounge and pool area, spans Decks 15 and 16 at the front of the ship. Linking its two levels is a glitzy staircase coated in Swarovski crystal.

‘Partnering with this famous brand was my mother-in-law Rafaela’s idea,’ said MSC Cruises ceo Pierfrancesco Vago. ‘It is the first time crystal is used this way in furnishing on a cruise ship.

‘It also underlines innovations in the architecture such as the sweeping main staircase and our transparent piano in the Atrium, and the spectacular chandelier in the Insolito Lounge. We will also have it on sister ship MSC Splendida, but in different colours,’ Vago added.

Among the many public spaces are standouts such as the charming, shop-lined Piazza San Giorgio, an Italian-style square in Ligurian tradition paved in Piacentine stone with an exclusive Sassuolo terracotta border and a frescoed ceiling simulating night and day.

Also noteworthy are the avant-garde Manhattan Jazz Bar, the Sports Bar with memorabilia including world champion Giacomo Agostini’s motorbike and the romantic L'Etoile restaurant, inspired by the Parisian Belle Epoque, with à la carte French cuisine.

A hot spot is the Liquid Disco, in bright Schiaparelli pink resin, which rises on stilts over the fountains of the Aquapark with ‘pools’ of glass on the walls and the dance floor, and specially shaped sofas and seats.

The spectacular 1,603-seat, high-tech Avanguardia theatre on three levels breaks from MSC’s Musica series. There is no brass but satin-finished curved sheets of steel and plexiglass which complement maroon touches and grey seats of alternating heights, a structural innovation that reflects the special-effects lighting.

Other features include a Formula 1 simulator and a 4D cinema. For children, the North Pole mini-club features polar bears and igloos, while the teens get their own colourful disco, Graffiti.
