On the Spirit class, a magnet so we can leave the air on with the door open.

.

CRUZBUDS, could you explain about the magnet? 1st Carnival Cruise for us. We have always had sliding doors. I have the bungy cord on my list to hold the door open. How does the magnet thingy work? Thanks so much,

Kaboochi

May I preface this by saying I AM NOT A GERMAPHOBE. But I dont want any part of being ill on a cruise so I bring folded up paper towels sprayed with Clorox Cleanup in a zip lock bag. First thing in the room I wipe the phone, door handles etc. Anywhere I think there might be a lingering norovirus hangin round. So far... so good. I bring enough to wipe the doorhandles every day after the cabin steward has been there. Takes up almost no room.

Good, so I am not the only one. My fiance thinks I'm mental when I do this. :p But I just buy a few packs of the travel size Clorox wipes instead of papertowels.

I also like the nightlight idea. I am going to use that one.

I'll second (or third, or fourth...) powerstrip, ipod dock, ziploc bags, pepto, alarm clock and beach bag.

On many Cruise Lines, you can tune to the Bow Cam of your ship. At night, tune to that channel and turn down the sound. In the morning, the rising sun will also put light (from the TV) into your cabin. (Some TVs can be adjusted to increase brightness, too, which can act as a nightlight)

These have already been mentioned I think...but the power bar and night lights are essential for us. We use one night light in the suite and one in the bathroom...both are motion activated so as soon as you get out of bed in the night to head for the convenience it comes on and one no longer has to blind oneself by turning on the bathroom light....the nightlight trips on as soon as you open the door!!

Best tips:

* Tipping the cabin attendant as soon as you meet him/her - made for really great service.

I have always wondered about this. Then I read on here from an ex cruise director that many of the cabin attendants consider this an insult. They said they take pride in taking care of all of their passengers. You don't have to bribe them in advance.

I am VERY confused! Are you saying that any magnetic strip will open my room safe? If that is so, should it even be CALLED a safe? I think magnetically sealed box might be more appropriate.;)

No that is not what they are saying. When you get to your room you program the safe to any card with a magnetic strip. Then that card will open and close your safe. We just use an old gift card.

Not sure if you are serious... If you are kidding then I am answering for those who don't know...

A card with a mag strip (almost any one) can be used to LOCK the safe. Then only the exact same Card can be used to open it.

I have used different cards, and they recommend against using your room key. Last year I used one of my many Casino rewards cards.

What type of ebook do you have? I'm very intersted in getting one, and have heard mixed reviews about most of them...

Haven't done a cruise - yet (few more days!) but have vacationed - and I now use an iPod Touch for eBooks. You can download eReader and get books there for about the same price as regular books, and if you search you can find some free sites with classics to download. Plus, it holds your games, info, music AND TV shows you bought or movies you rented or bought. Love the little device! Plus it fits in your pocket

Loving this thread - learning a lot!

My hubby wanted to put in his 2 cents: a bungie cord to hold the balcony door open.

Also, I like those command hooks for the back of the cabin door- the kind that adhere with sticky stuff that you can easily remove. Great for sign and sail lanyard so you don't walk out of the room without it!:o

The bungee cord for the balcony door was the best tip ever given to me!!!

Also taking a SMALL rolling ice chest on board have it checked as luggage, filled only with water bottles or soda!! (no ice or beer) We bungee's our lid to be safe.

When we did that on Pride, OMG, when we got to our room, the ice chest was filled with ice waiting for us!!! Every day our cabin steward did this for us!

ok I have a few:

-Bring a beach bag and a collapsable cooler. We have our taxi stop at a convenience store and we stock up on beer/pop/water/snacks for the day.

-Be careful of the motion sickness patches. They caused some of our group to be sleepy and some short term amnesia, took away from their enjoyment of the trip.

-Take advatage of formal night! It's like prom, have fun with it.

set an open course for the virgin sea....styx

What I learned from my first cruise - keep on taking the Bonine or ginger pills even if you're not sick. We took them the first couple of days and none of us were seasick. Spent the day on land in Cozumel, and that night when the ship started moving again - a couple of us were seasick. We had stopped taking the pills, thinking we were fine. Next time, I'm taking them every day, whether I need them or not. We didn't have any side effects like sleepiness from them, so no reason not to take them.

for those with a balcony and wanting to keep the door open.... the door stop for cabin door (wedge type) works better for propping open the balcony door...

JUST REMEMBER........ do NOT open your cabin door when the balcony door is propped open.

downy wrinkle releaser is an absolute MUST!

Will a hotel room key card work too? Thank you

Supposedly you can only bring coolers on now if they are checked in your luggage that you give to the porter. I learned about this on a recent CC thread and I just read it when my documents arrived last week. Hope this helps, Kaboochi

any card with a magnetic strip on the back will work.... It is safer to use one that you don't need or ever use. next time you go to the grocery store or walmart pick up a gift card.. it doesn't have to be activated at the register. ;)

Scraphappy asked what a Kindle was.

I believe it's an electronic book product that Amazon sells -- you can download ebooks to it from their site for (I think) cheaper than a paper or hardback, and of course the electrons weigh a lot less than any other form of book.

thanks!

LOL My boyfriend thought i was nuts too, but too bad he ended up help me disenfect the room.

One importnat thing is to disinfect the live preservers, before you even have to put them on in the muster drill.

We went to our room, we where disinfecting stuff and they called for the drill. I had read it in the boards some where to do this too so i made sure to.
