Tiger temple near bridge over the river Kwai

Could someone actually explain Tiger Temple to me please? I don't mean the cruelty vs non-cruelty debate but rather what it actually is. Do the large tigers just roam around or are they on leads? I am wondering if I am brave enough to visit.

We just returned from Tiger temple and seeing the bridge over the river Kwai. The tigers are on leashes and you can go up and pet them. There are handlers with them who will also take your picture with them for free. It was a interesting time but is a long drive from the port. We had an excellent guide and driver with Bangkok Day tours.

If you do decide to do the Tiger Temple don't wear anything red. They will not allow you into the grounds. Red excites the tigers.

On our visit, my wife was wearing a red tee shirt. She ended up wearing a black sweater over the tee on a 90+ degree day.

when we visited, we were asked to remove hats and glasses...we were escorted one at a time by two staff members; one positioned us behind each tiger and then stepped back and the other took pictures of us. They encouraged us to put our hands on the tigers...it was quite surreal. The tigers were tethered. After the grown tigers, we were allowed to sit with tiger cubs and take photos ourselves, but there was always a staff member within a foot or two. Quite an experience!
