Selfloadingcargo Posted January 19, 2009 #1 Share Posted January 19, 2009 I've thoroughly enjoyed reading all the posts on this site, but this is my first, so please bear with me. We're used to small ships and have taken the plunge. So, we've booked a lovely suite on the QM2 for her 5th Birthday cruise round Britain and are thoroughly looking forward to it. The itinery is fantastic and the ship looks beautiful. We don't really care about "liners" or references to past glories, all we want is an enjoyable trip with comprable service to say Four Seasons or Seabourn, both of which we LOVE. Not too much to ask...... Will QG live up to the Hype? Many thanks, Jamie :)
wripro Posted January 19, 2009 #2 Share Posted January 19, 2009 The QG will definitely live up to the hype, as will the cabin which is very spacious and lovely. You also have the QG lounge for tea and predinner drinks plus the concierge lounge where you can have many things done for you, i.e. shore excursions, reservations etc. These areas are top notch. In all honesty, once you leave these areas and move about the rest of the ship you will not experience Seabourn or Four Seasons service. QM2 is simply to large with too many passengers to give you that kind of hands on service. Still, you will enjoy your cruise as she is a terrific liner. ManxMary Posted January 25, 2009 #3 Share Posted January 25, 2009 SLC....the QM2 is a little bit of England on the high seas & the class system is alive & well. So long as you realise that outside of the Grill areas the service & clientele will not be the same as Seabourn et al you will enjoy the experience. To compare some familiar UK high street brands.... QG = Selfridges Food Hall PG = A high end Waitrose branch (eg Canary Wharf) Britannia Club = Sainsburys Britannia = Morrissons :p

But don't be too alarmed if you do happen to stray outside the elegant haven that is the Queen's Grill. Should you accidentally happen to have any social intercourse with, or (heavens forbid) touch, any of us denizens of the steerage class, I understand that Cunard offer a complimentary delousing service, a free health check, and two sessions of post traumatic stress counselling. They will also, on request, provide an armed escort comprising six former members of the Royal Gurkha Rifles to guide you safely back to security of the Grill. Perhaps I should advise all of those who dined in the QG on Jan 10 to rush to their physicians:eek:. I fear that they might have been infected by the dreaded curse of the steerage class when I dined there. On second thought, perhaps not. I find a bit of mixing of the clientele good for those who perceive themselves superior to those of us in the humble steerage class cabins. ;)

How do Cunard get around the problem on QV that is keeping me awake at night, namely the mixing of steerage cabins and QG suites on the same deck? I simply shudder at the thought of having to gaze upon the lower orders whilst perambulating between my stateroom and the QG restaurant. I asked Cunard's shoreside operation but, would you believe it, the silly young girl simply giggled when I asked for confirmation that steerage passengers are locked in their cabins until their social superiors had departed. And when I suggested that perhaps they are instructed to prostrate themselves on the floor as I pass by, I thought she was going to expire. I'm not a snob, of course... I simply shudder at the thought of having to gaze upon the lower orders whilst perambulating between my stateroom and the QG restaurant. Worry not. The labouring classes are wakened at 4.00am and, as soon as they have been freshly whipped, they are escorted to the stoke hold where they spend the daylight ours trimming the bunkers. In the evening, once the last Grill deity is safely ensconsed in their Olympian splendour, the povo are taken on deck, hosed down with cold seawater, then put to work as scullions. At 3.00am they are allowed to return to their dormitories for 45 minutes rest. J
