so today i just booked the ryndam 4/4/09 sea of cortez sailing,

and we are booked on deck 3 midship, the promenade deck,

the holland america representative said this is perfect since we can walk right out on the decks outside,

anyone stay on this deck? any pros or cons about it ?

The other down side is that ABOVE the Promenade Deck, there are certain areas that create noise -- galleys and service corridors and such. One of our tablemates was in

"37_" and found she got a lot of noise from above. Check the deck plan for the deck above the P Deck to see if there's similar above the cabin you've booked.

The upside is that it'll be easy for you (and the kids??) to access fresh air, and exercise. And if you're travelling with someone with mobility problems, no elevator to "outdoors" -- just out the door.

All that said, I have my eye on a Promenade Deck cabin to Alaska. Haven't jumped on it yet, but that's because of $$$$, not location.

We were on an obstructed view on the promenade deck on the Amsterdam in Alaska.

  1. Yes, you are close to the biggest balcony on the ship. :)
  2. We were below the galley(kitchen) or a dining room service area and hear very little noise. For Outside cabins there may be some noise in the mornings when they rinse off the deck.
  3. The outside cabin's windows are mirrored: it is hard to look in during the day time (you have to go right up to the window and cup your eyes to see something). At night when it is darker outside than inside you can see in! Draw the drapes at night!
  4. HAL doesn't have the account nformation on the TV in the cabin.

We liked our cabin.

I have never tried - or needed - to do that.

Theo nly cash I need is for when we are in a port and often purchases are charged and for tipping. I don't take much cash with me and don't seem to need much.

Quite a few have brought this up, but not exclusively on this thread. This matter appears constantly almost every time a question re: that cabin type is asked.

WHY anyone would want to do that is beyond me.

(Unless they're some kind of perv ...  )

It can happen inadvertently. I assure you I'm not a perv :D Walking along, looking around, oops! I've never seen anything untoward, but still, have been able to see into a cabin (and NO I did NOT have my nose pressed against the window :D)

I know what you're talking about, but there's no need for someone to press thier face against a window to satisfy thier curiousity on being able to look thru polarized glass.

Seen a few instances on the S ships where I'd find a pax diverting themselves from thier walk, and try to look inside a cabin. Hopefully, it was "thier" cabin ... not some dirty old man/woman looking for cheap thrills. ;)

do you know about holland america? is your bill viewable on the tv?

do they have Atms?

im just wondering , we have cruised but never on holland america

No ATMs that I know of. You can exchange money on board, but ATMs on shore are a better deal, or get some pesos from your bank. USD to MXN peso looks favorable right now.

A copy of your bill will be provided a day or two before the end of the cruise, and you can review it against your receipts, which you will of course have kept very neatly in a folder. Or, if you're like me, you search through pockets, books, safe, drawers, etc. to see what you've signed. This will also show the automatic tips ($11/passenger/day). I've never had any items on the bill we had not charged.

We have been on the Ryndam Lower Promenade 3 times for the Sea of Cortez (our favorite itinerary.) You do need to be aware of what is above you...we learned the hard way on our first HAL cruise, taking a gaurantee cat. C. We were under the galley.:( Now we book an HH at the back, just under the entrance to the dining room. Very Quiet.:)

Enjoy the Ryndam and the cruise!

We are booked in 390 a H/C cabin on lower prom' deck for a Mexican Riviera cruise in April. It seems to be very convenient for someone who has mobility issues and is dependant on a 4 wheel walker. Does anyone have any experience of that cabin? I am curious about the layout.

We have been on the L/P deck before (not on the Ryndam) and have never had a problem with the window. Most if not all people are just walking enjoying the prom' deck and could care less about what is happening in the cabins. I agree it is a little darker than a true outside but IMO the advantages more than compensate for that.

Yes, the HH cabins near the stern are my favorite bargain cabins. Pretty quiet due to the dining room above and usually priced like an inside cabin. I *have* had someone press their nose against my window, but said something to their companion like "no, can't tell what's inside here". I also pressed my nose up against my window to see if people could see in, but had the thought "did I count right? Is this really MY cabin?".

We were on the Ryndam last spring and were in C328, just off the atrium, next to the Cruise Director's office. We loved it. We also tested our window on a cabin crawl and my husband was not able to see in during the day. At night it was a completely different story. The Steward always closed the drapes when he made up the room.

We had no noise and it was great to be that close to the outside. We are booked on the Ryndam again this April. Enjoy your cruise.
