There are a few "friends" groups that hold meetings on most all sailings. If you google "Friends of Bill W" you will find your answer...and in case you're wondering...you can also google "Friends of Dorothy" to see who they are as well. I knew FOD, but I never knew what FOBW was.

Thanks for the reminder about wiki for stuff like this. :) I love that site -- FOD leads to learning about Dorothy Parker (a woman I WISH I had known in person), and so on. I've been known to spend several hours immersed in wiki and following links. The internet is an amazing thing!

Bill Wilson was the founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. Meetings are advertised as Friends off Bill W in keeping with AA's pledge of anonymity and it's philosophy of new members through attraction not advertisement. The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking and as such Friends meetings are pretty well open to anyone.

I wass also curious about this many, many years ago. So one day I decided to go and see what it was all about. It was being held in the Piano Bar. I got there about 5 minutes before the designated time. I waited and waited -- no one showed up. There wasn't even a bar tender. So I went to the Casino Bar next door and asked the bar tender about the Bill W and friends meeting. He wwas nice to explain everything to me.

One of the funnier aspects of the two prevalent "Friends" (Bill and Dorothy) meetings is how many people think that Friends of Dorothy is a meeting for the family and friends of alcoholics (Alanon) and go there seeking a meeting. Personally, I know at least 3 people who have done that.

Buddy and I combine the best of both "friends" groups by tipping a cold one the first day out in memory of Dorothy Fuldheim (It's a Cleveland thing and you need to be in your late 50s or older *L*)
