Help - I want to eat fresh crabs while in Alaska...

I found out that Alaska King Crabs are fresh-frozen, not fresh. That was a true disappointment. However, I've heard that Dungeoness crabs are in season during the summer. Does anyone know of good places to get crabs at these ports, possib:)ly all you can eat crab feasts?

 

Ketchikan, Skagway, Valdez, Seward, Kodiak, Icy Strait Point and Juneau.

 

We will be on the 14 day Pacific Princess sailing from Seattle on June 11, 2009.

Princess offers shore excursions to an Alaskan Crab Feed. It's expensive, but it includes sightseeing and watching as they empty the crab pots.

In May/08, Crab Crackers in Ketchikan was serving Dungeness. they were open when we got there around 10:30 am, CLOSED when we arrived back to eat at 4 pm, so I can't tell you whether they are good or not, nor whether they were fresh. but they were Dungeness.

We had fresh Dungeness crab at the Office Bar in Icy Strait Point. It was delicious!

Dungeness crab are named after Dungeness, WA. Don't have to go any farther than Anthony's Pier 66 in Seattle to get fresh Dungeness crab.

Just head the mile to downtown Hoonah at Icy Straight Point---the Office has great crab

There are shore excursions where you catch your own crabs and eat them. There's one in Ketchikan. Is that fresh enough? :)

Thanks to all that have given me information. I'm sure we will have plenty of opportunities to each crab. Do any of you know if Princess brings dungeoness crabs onboard? I've heard they bring local food onto the ship.

Definitely, the place to enjoy the Alaska crab experience is at The Office in Hoonah (Icy Strait Point)!

 

It is a dingy local bar with lots of sourdoughs sitting around drinking local beer. They basically serve nothing but crab, but the crab is very good! It is a lot of fun.
