smoking on carnival

The best cabin for you to select would be a spa cabin -no smoking in the spa cabin or spa deck...

With that said..considering most cruisers dont spend a majority of their time in their cabin, you are going to encounter smoke..

I think the best suggestion is find another line with more restricted smoking rules ... :)

Thank you for posting this info. I had no idea of that.

Um, you could simply stop posting on the thread. If it angers you, don't read the thread.

Paradise wasn't a complete failure but it certainly fell well below Carnival's normal occupancy rate and revenue. The biggest problem was the group business....which is a huge moneymaker for them. They couldn't attract the large groups and charters do due to the no smoking rule. In any given group, there will be a certain percentage of smokers.....who won't book on a nonsmoking ship.

In addition, the revenue from the casino was lower as well a bar revenue being down.

Believe it, if the nonsmokers could have supported this ship so it was equal to others in their fleet, Paradise would still be a nonsmoking ship. Carnival would never toss off something that was profitable.

As for "not having balconies", Paradise was the last of EIGHT Fantasy Class ships built by Carnival. None of the ships in this class had many balconies at all.....yet, were wildly successful...and they are all still sailing....and all making money.

My experience on the Legend in Dec was different than many others. Yes, the cabin was just fine. The main restaurant and the main show lounge were ok. The bulk of the remainder of the ship was not.

The problem is the smoke from the casino drifts backwards into the atrium area and up like a chimney. The lido buffet had smoke not from smokers in the buffet, but rising from the atrium. MOST don't seem to notice this. I did. I apparently am more sensitive than most. I found it difficult to find places that didn't bother my eyes in the buffet area. We ate most of our breakfasts and as many lunches as were offered in the dining room, to avoid this buffet area.

We also missed out on much of the entertainment venues because of the smoke. The main show lounge was always fine. Enjoying classical music in the atrium area was out for us. The high tea time was borderline. I was there a good 20 minutes or so before my eyes began to have a mild reaction.

The adult pool area in the aft of the ship was ok on one side if sitting in the open. Beware, if you sit under the canopy near the bar, it will hold smoke though you might not notice it until one's body begins to react as mine did.

When we got back from our Legend cruise, I swore off Carnival...then I got the reality check in dollars and cents. We can wait MUCH longer between cruises and go upscale to Celebrity or we can book again with Carnival for less than half the price and go in with the attitude of we'll be getting half a cruise for the lower cost.

If your family is budget tight, Carnival is a better overall value. How much of a problem for your mother the smoke will be is an issue to be decided. Like I say, the cabin was not a problem for us at all. If the casino is forward of an open atrium, beware that it will act as a chimney to draw the smoke upwards into other non-smoking areas. It is a design/ventilation flaw for smoke sensitive folks.

Knowing how badly I reacted to our last cruise with the smoke, will I personally book Carnival again now that I've had my $ and cents reality check? *sigh* Unless we win the lotto I'll have to choose, give up cruising, hope for a last minute deal on something like Celebrity or accept that I'm getting half a cruise on a Carnival ship and make the most of it. If your mother will be happy with the half a cruise, ie, dinner and a show in the evenings, ports of call, and limited outdoor areas, it will definitely be easier on the budget. Just know going in what you'll be getting.

May I suggest checking the prices of Celebrity out of New Jersey... I have paid more for my last two carnival cruises then any of the celebritys I went on...

There are some great deals to be had.. They have great itinerarys too

Thanks. I'll take a look. I have tentatively gotten a Carnival Cruise out of Baltimore for $435 a head with military discount. Celebrity won't give us the military discount because dh is neither active nor retired. He only did about 8 years. I need to firmly decide soon as final payment will be due. I prefer Baltimore as it serves double duty on my airfare, allowing us to visit my father for a few days, (coming out of WI). If we go, I'll KNOW going in what I'm up against and will plan our days accordingly. I'm not thrilled with my options, but they are what they are at the moment. I will check out Celebrity again and see what's out there.

I agree that the smoking in the casino permeates the entire space and does effect the atrium as well. I just sailed the Celebrity Solstice. What a pleasure to play blackjack for hours without any smoking odor!
