Day One---

I finally sat down to write this review. This was my second cruise, as well as my mom. This was my best friends first. I was a little nervous that she wouldn’t be a “cruise person” but she loved it! We’re already trying to plan another one.

Since we live in Baton Rouge ( originally from New Orleans . My best friend flew in from Chicago a few days before) we drove to the terminal and parked in the garage. It was I think $12 or $14 a day, paid up front and they do take credit cards and cash. It was kind of confusing to get to the terminal garage because we came to the terminal from the direction on the Mardi Gras World storage area that’s on the pier. Which is on the opposite end from the entrance of the garage so we had to drive down a bit. I guess the easiest way to tell people how to get back there is to say to go downtown like your going to the Convention Center and follow the signs J .

Picture016.jpg

Anyway we drive thru the garage and you’ll see the porters who take your luggage. They checked out tickets and the guys explained a lot of stuff we already knew about the ship and the check - in process. We then went to park the car. People were still getting off the ship as we saw people leaving the garage. We also saw people with a ton a luggage who choose to carry it all on themselves. Good luck to them I thought, I rather have someone else do all that.

We went down the elevator and entered the building following the signs. The lady at the door checked out fun passes and ids and we went thru the metal detectors. I beeped but only because I forgot to take off my watch J . BTW I was carrying on a case of water and did so with no problems except I had to hold it while we watched in line.

We got in line to check in and the long wasn’t that long. The time was about 11 or 11:30. The line was going kind of slow as people we having a few problems at the desks. VIP check in was going into their room but later they must of closed the room because VIP was checking in at the desks with us but standing to the side. It didn’t bother me since no one was cutting, they were using the end desk mostly. Since there were a lot of people I think they should have left the VIP check in room open. There was also a wedding party, with a lot of people. We saw the bride and groom through out the cruise and they were in the Love and Marriage game.

So finally after a wait we got to a desk. The lady was very nice…..however there was a problem with out reservation. See, my grandmother was supposed to go on the cruise originally, she got sick over New Years, she is much better now, we were going to cancel the cruise but she insisted that we go and bring stuff back for her ( I was instructed to win at the casino…didn’t happen lol) so my best friend took her place by doing the name change. Well for some reason Carnival had me attached to her instead on my mom. Which would have been fine is she was my grandma but she my friend and my age! Also Carnival had me listed as Miss instead of Ms and in their system that makes you a minor, even though I’m 21 (I wasn’t when the cruise was booked, I was 20 and the cruise was my birthday present) for some reason their system did not change me over to Ms when my birthday came, even though my birthday was in the system and my age popped up 21. Anyway, it wouldn’t allow me to add my CC and for some reason my friend couldn’t add hers. So after some time we filled out the S and S paper form that’s delivered to the pursers desk at sail off and our cards were left as is. (They did try attaching me to my mom but that didn’t work either.)

So finally we left the desk, took our pictures, by this time they had boarded everyone who was sitting and we pretty much walked on the ship. We were on Empress deck which is were your embark and debark from, so we decided to try and see if we could drop our carry-on in the room. (mainly me not wanting to carry that water anymore!) We were in E179 which is right by the back elevators that takes you to the Lido Buffet, The Jubilee Dining Room, The very in of the Promenade deck. It was easy in the mooring to do down to breakfast and easy when it was time for dinner.

We went to the lido for lunch. Burgers, fries, chips and salsa. All good. My mom loooooves the chips at the grill. So we eat. People watched. Walked around a bit and stumbled on the $10 everything store. Of course it wasn’t open yet but we already had plans to come back as I wanted a new watch and I saw a gorgeous baby blue one through the window.

We went to the dining room to see what our seating was. We didn’t have such great tablemates last time and we were hoping for a table for four. We waiting in line for a few minutes and we got to the Maitre D who told us, yes we were at the a table for 10 and last seating. My mom wanted early seating but asked if we could have a table for four she would gladly keep late seating. Our request was granted and we had a table for 4 late seating.

Picture023.jpg

We went to the room to get our life jackets as the drill was coming up. We had “F” section which is on the lido deck. Which was fine with me because on the sensation we had to go to our station and then move up top and me crammed in. On the lido all we did was stand for a minute and which people were moving by the boats we waited and sat until we got the all clear. However during the drill we began sail away and turning in the river. Kind of bummed we didn’t get to see much of the turning but soon as the drill was over we went on the funnel deck and watched us leave New Orleans.

We walked around the ship a bit and decided to go get ready for the welcome aboard show. I was really excited because I heard great things about Big Tex, the cruise director and I was not disappointed. He was AMAZING! On our last cruise the CD didn’t do as much or talk as much. Tex went above and beyond what I expected. Plus he’s a cutie J . We went to dinner after the show and the food was great. I honestly can not remember what we had each night since I forgot to write it down but I remember my mom had melting cake every night, my best friend had cappuccino every night ( came with out request every night after the first night, yes it was free) and I remember for desert I had cheesecake, apple pie and pineapple sorbet through the whole cruise (I don’t like chocolate). I had my stuffed mushrooms (my fave thing on the ship. Bums me that its only on the menu one night.) I tried lobster for the first time (to my knowledge) which I shared with my mom. It was ok, I’m not expert, of course. I rate the food 8/10 for the whole ship.

Picture147.jpg

We did go to the pursers desk and get my card issue resolved and my moms OBC resolved, since they had split it among everyone instead of giving it just to her. No problem, they moved it to her account. I tried putting my DC on my account but from some reason it came up as a prepaid card? I have no idea what that was about so after a minute or two we just decided to put me on my mom CC and be done with it. I still don’t know why my card came up prepaid, since my friend used a debit card as well and hers did not come out that way (when you do any transaction at the pursers desk a receipt is printed that you have to sign and mine had “prepaid” account balance of like $38 or something on it.) So all that solved.

We hung out in the Casino, I was up, then down, then up then down. Lost a bit of cash. I also went and talked to the casino host , since I had signed up on the ocean players website as sailing again, he went to the back and came back with a t-shirt for me and said there would be a letter in my room tonight or tomorrow saying for me to come back for a free drink and 500 points on my card. Unfortunately I forgot all about this, but oh well. I did end the cruise with almost 200 points so I guess the 500 would have come in handy had I been trying to get to the $1000, which equals a $10 cash back award on the ship. Next time I’ll remember.

Me and my friend went to the Electricity Disco for the Singles Meet and Greet. This was for the 25 and under singles and each age had there own location on the ship to meet. So we went to the disco and were listening to the music. I was dancing in my seat , to myself since she didn’t want to get on the floor. This is were we met a guy we would see throughout the whole cruise. I mean he was EVERYWHERE! We watched the fun ship videos on the TV and he was all over that. He was drunk 95% of the time we saw him and always dancing. Dude can not dance. But he was funny. He was with a group of guys who were sitting on the bar stools near us and they egged him on. He was dancing with every girl on the floor, trying to grind and everything. He wasn’t really out of hand. The DJ sure knew how to clear the floor because he started playing old school music and son people got tired of it and left the floor. All it took was one song to clear the floor.

There was this drunk lady who the drunk guy danced with but she on with I guess her husband. Mind you she was way older than 25 (infact half the room was over 25 but this club had the best music on the ship IMO.) She was dancing with random guys and then she danced with this one guy who maybe was in the group with her and she came to us (we were sitting on the bar stools that are right at the edge of the dance floor) and got RIGHT in my face and said “ your not going to put something in his drink.) I leaned back a little because she was so close you can smell what she drank with her breakfast! She wanted to put the guys drink down in front of me. She then went to my friend got right in her face and said pretty much the same and was laughing and smiling like a drunk fool. I brushed it off because I could have told her to get out of my face, but I was on vacation, I’ll save the drama for the main land!

She did however come back with a different guy right before we left. Said something and tried to put the guys drink down, he in turned picked it back up. She took it again and put it down and he picked it back up, the whole time never actually looking at each other. It was pretty funny because, dude obviously wanted his beer and to just chill and she wanted to dance.

We went to back to the casino for a bit, played the coin push machine, lost all my cash and went to bed.

DAY 2 - Fun Day At Sea

We woke up around 9 and went down to breakfast at the Windows Of The Sea buffet, which is the inside Lido area. The usual breakfast. If you read my last review I did say that the grits were watery all of my last cruise. This of course was no different. Runny grits. The French toast rocked though so I guess that made up for the grits. The breakfast pretty much rotated oatmeal/cream of wheat….has board patties/I guess you would call country fried potatoes?….pancakes/French toast. The on going problem with most people was the bacon. I’m not a big bacon person but my mom is and she had to ask a few time for crispy bacon because it was almost always soggy.

After breakfast we went to the casino and then to the Ship and Port talk with Tex. As I said before, I loved Tex, he’s so funny. I actually want to take my next cruise on the Valor since that’s were he’s moving to in April. J . he gave a lot of info on all the excursions the ship was providing and about the ports. Of course we know that yes they are trying to sell their excursions. This played on the TV too.

I did get my watch form the $10 shop, which was always packed. Most of the stuff was watches, ties, scarf and evening bags. More about the shop later.

We went in the pool for a bit, I of course forgot it was salt water. Careful if you are holding on to the wood thing in the middle because when the ship moves it will splash back at you. Not so fun to get salt water in the face lol. Anyway we went tot eh Serenity Deck and had plan to get in the hot tubs there but it was always packed. We sat out for a while but it started getting cool and breezy. As we were leaving to go get ready for Formal night the hot tubs got filled with at least 15 people plus people standing around it. It was amazing they could get that many people in there. I don’t know if staff told them anything or not since I don’t think I ever saw a sign about how many people could get in the tub.

Picture032.jpg

We got dressed for the captions reception. Caption Scala is really nice and funny. In introduced his crew by songs he picked to describe them. The drinks were flowing, the food was okay. I remember I had a martini at first, not my kind of drink so my mom took it and she drunk it and she was giving another and the same waiter came back and bought her ANOTHER martini and she hadn’t even drank the second one yet. I had a screw driver, which was good, and a plain ole fruit punch. My friend, I don’t remember what she had but she mixed it with the fruit punch and said it tasted good that way.

Picture044.jpg

After the reception, we went to dinner. after dinner I didn’t feel so well so I went to bed and they went to the show, which they said was good. The next day….PROGRESSO!

Day 3 - Progresso

We had to get up VERY early. Our tour left and I think 7:15. We ate breakfast and was already running late, when they finally said we could get off for some reason the elevators they were supposed to be working weren’t they only had one gangway open so we had to find the right elevators. We made it to our tour meeting point which was Chichen Itza Mayan Ruins tour. We took air conditioned buses there. It was about tours hours each way on the bus, spotting just outside the ruins for a bathroom and shopping break. They had a lot of nice things. At the first stop some of the prices were in Mayan money instead of Pesos or American. I didn’t get anything here but my mom got some platters. The area was very very pretty. We got back on the bus and got to the ruins. The whole area is lived in my Mayan people, its like a little village in itself. When you get to the ruins its and outside building you enter through and of course there are many vendors trying to sell you things. This one guys said “$5 everything $5” and the girl in front us wanted this pretty wooden and paper umbrella. Well when she asked how much he said $10. I shook my head at her for getting it because, the umbrella broke about 5 mins later. It was nice but not worth $10.

Picture048.jpg

We walked in giving our tickets and they also pulled a little tab off our wrist bands our guide told us about the ruins. We later got time to walk around on our own and shop, as there are vendors located around the ruins as well. They do try and get you, I feel they were way more aggressive than in the Bahamas. We did find some good deals. They all have a saying “come and see, its almost free” to try and draw you in. haggle with them, they want to sell their stuff, you just have to weed through the factory made stuff to find the real and handmade things. I did find a dolphin that they guy wanted $15 for, not even a big one. It fit in my pocket. I talked him down to $2. that’s pretty much all I bought. We almost missed the bus back because I wanted to buy a Mayan calander mask from this guy but he wanted like $50 for it and he went down on the price but by the time he got down to the price I wanted to pay I had to go because we had a ways to walk to get back to the bus. We made it second to last and got out bag lunch, which was…okay. Sandwich, chips, water, fruit, and a chocolate cake thing.

Picture051.jpg

Picture057.jpg

Picture089.jpg

Back on the ship on time, we did get to look around the pier a bit and buy some more. At the check point people we asked to finish their beers before they entered the dock. Some people were ok with this, some weren’t. Common sense to me says you can’t bring open alcohol back on the ship. We ate back on the ship and went to the library to play board games. The library’s games and book are only open for about an hour each day, so if you miss it, you have to wait until the next day. I supposed you could ask the pursers desk to see if someone came open the case but I doubt it. You could sign out books and games and bring it to your room or somewhere on the ship, as long as its returned to the room. We played a few games and the girl running the library left after her hours and less than 2 minutes later a lady and her grandson came in and pulled on the case trying to get this Spiderman puzzle. She asked were we got the game and we told her (the girl told use to put the game on the top shelf when we were done.) she left came back and did the same thing. Expecting different results I guess. We left to get ready for dinner.

We went to dinner that night and later to the Showcase of Stars, which is a talent show featuring the passengers. Some acts were amazing. Some not so amazing. Tex sung for us and danced. This was by far the funniest dancing I’ve ever seen in my life. I wish I would have recorded it or bought the video because it was that funny.

Later on after the Showcase was the Liar’s Club. a lot of people didn’t come to this show but they should have. Its like to tell the truth but they picked words out the dictionary and the three panelist which were, Tex, this Assistant CD Gary and Brittany, whose on the entertainment staff (and kind of annoying to me) had to say what they think the words mean and only one of them was correct. It was roll on the floor funny. I won’t give too much away but I would stay up a little late and watch this because it is very funny.

Starstuck05,

We are getting ready to go on the Fantasy for MardiGras week. Most of the people in my group are in the area that you stayed. How was it? Did you find alot of motion back there? What dining room did you have for dinner? I guess it is really nice having the elevators so close. Also I would imagine that it is quiet back there. Please let me know.

Thanks,

NOwendy

Thanks Everyone!, the only movement we felt was the rocking of the ship on our way back to New Orleans, and that was all over the ship. Besides that it was fine. We had the Jubilee dining room, which was two floors up from our room if I'm remembering right. The location is great for us because if we wanted to go to the Atruim, we just walked down the whole, it may seem like a long walk but it was fine, easier then waiting for the elevators, or climbing the stairs.:)

We had nothing planned this day so we decided to wing it. I had coupons to get free Margaritas a Pancho’s Backyard, so we wanted to do that later. We decided to take a taxi ride downtown, and came cross a guy offering tours $25 a person with stops at historic sites, and local thing as well as shopping and the beach. We decided to do it and got into a van with another family, who some happened to be from New Orleans as well. While most of the family was okay, one lady was a little bit annoying. Her on going joke was she had to go to the bathroom as soon as we left somewhere and she asked a ton of questions that had almost nothing to do with what we were seeing and doing. The tour was great. They took us to see all over the island, in the poor areas as well. We went to the Black Coral Factory, which I was thinking was going to be big but actually was a little bitty shop in the middle of a nationhood. If you don’t know were your going, you’ll miss it. We stopped at a mini Mayan temple monument and at the beach. Sine we had nothing planned that day, we didn’t bring our beach stuff so, me and my friend put our feet in the water and the pool. My mom sat in a beach chair and watched us. The other family had swim gear so they got in the water and the pool. Well some of them. All one wanted to do was shop so we only stayed at the beach about 30 minutes.

Picture122.jpg

We went shopping next, at a little shopping area, which I think was downtown. We did a tequila tasting, which I didn’t take part in because I don’t really like tequila, we also were given frozen mango slushy things that were okay. We were allowed an hour of shopping and we went to this 99 cent little store and got a few things and a couple of other store, but no real bargains like we got in Progresso. a lot of the same things. We got back on the bus and went back to the pier. I took a picture of the van we used and our guides name was Michael or Migual, however you choose to pronounce and his daughter whose name I forgot. The daughter really didn’t like the bathroom lady as every time the lady said something, she said something to her father in Spanish. I was sitting up front with them. I don’t speak much Spanish, but in any language you know when someone is talking about someone else.

We paid at the pier when we got dropped off and decided against Pancho’s Backyard, instead we wanted to eat back on the ship. My friend and I got a sample from Fat Tuesdays while my mom shopped for tequila at the Duty free shop right at the pier. She ended up with 2 bottles $10 each. They also had the kind with the worm. They did take the bottles when you got back on the ship, wrote you name on it and room number and also wrote it on a list by room number. We ate back on the ship and went on deck to watch the sail away. Which was late.

As they were getting ready to leave A LOT of people were late coming back to the ship. One who could barley walk and was bought to the ship by one of the bicycle guys and another who couldn’t walk at all and needed a wheelchair. I have no idea what happened to them or why they were very late.

We were supposed to go see the show “Showtime” but ended up in the Casino before dinner. We went outside for the deck party and Mexican buffet and called it a night.

Day 5 - Fun Day At Sea 2

We ate breakfast again and went to the debarkation talk. Very informative and entertaining. Really the same old same old, nothing really new. I will mention however that on the 3rd day I think we got a halfway bill of our SS account in our room. I figuring that’s normal for 5 night cruises since the Sensation was 4 nights and we didn’t get that. Anyway, we decided to go to the pool and hot tub. It was my first time in the hot tubs and we happened to get in when no one else was in there, which we good. And we did get joined by two ladies. They talked to each other and really didn’t say anything to us. We went to the water slide next. My friend rode while I watched. I saw they had a Chocolate Bonanza thing in the Windows of the sea so we decided to go eat lunch. Lunch was American, with fried chicken and baked potatoes. There wasn’t much chocolate at the bonanza for my friend. It was also very packed so we ended up eating at one of the table on the outside area on the side of the ship. It was windy but nice. We went inside and ran into my mom who had been looking for us and sat with her while she ate. We decided to go the Q and A with Caption Scala and he answered many questions people had.

I did forget to mention a few things. One was at the debark talk Tex mentioned there was a possible Man overboard the night before around 2:30 in the morning. We didn’t hear a thing but they only made the announcement in a few cabins. They did find the guy in the casino .

This is what we heard from the Caption on the Q and A later, These two guys were on deck smoking and one turned away from his friend for a second and turned back and his friend was gone. So thinking his friend went over board he went down the pursers and told them and then they contacted the caption who I think turned the ship around and stopped. They did a search of the area and made and announcement for the guys and a guess a little while later the guy was found in the casino. Some people say it was a prank, that the guys taught it would be funny to pull this and they got arrested, some say it was real thing. I don’t know.

The other thing was the watch I bought. I bought it on day 2. Wore it to the ruins on day 3 and to Cozumel on day 4. Well we were sitting on a bench waiting to get back in the van while we were shopping in Cozumel and I noticed that my watch had stopped working. No big deal, we decided to bring it back to the shop and get another one. Which we did, no problem. So later that night I realized the new watch wasn’t working either! So by then I was like, I don’t think so. So we took it back to the shop on the sea day and she refunded it. Maybe it was the type of watch I got that was defective. I didn’t hear anyone else complain about it, but the sales girl also didn’t looked shocked either. Both watches sounded like something was loose inside of it. Oh well.

After the talk we went to take a nap and got ready for the “ticket to ride” show. I’m not a Beatles fan, so the show was just okay to me. I an art fan and love the picture of the Beetles crossing Abby street and they had a background like it, so I figured they would do a dance using it but they didn’t. We did get glow sticks though. After the show was dinner and then me and my friend went to the Comedy show with Tim Harkleroad since we missed the first one with the other comic. This guy was soooo funny. We laughed, if your easily offended, I wouldn’t recommend him. He didn’t pick on people in the crowd but he did say some off the wall jokes.

We spend the rest of the night in the Electricity Disco people watching. Of course the guy showed up again AND the lady but we were in the far corner this time, but she did pretty much the same thing she did to us, to the people sitting on the bar stools. The DJ was good this night, did it mention is was cute? And can sing? He was singing one night in the promenade deck by the casino bar.

We called it a night, I did forget to mention that we packed up after dinner and sat our bags out. We saw people at the last minute putting their bags out. They were supposed to be out at midnight

Debarking

We got up and went for breakfast. Our last meal on the ship, so sad. They were just calling self assist when we sat down to eat and we were up late. We had number 5. After breakfast we went back to our room and our room stewart let us stay in the room until they called us, since we were on the Empress deck anyway. I should say we just stayed in the room not that he let us because he kind of sucked the whole cruise. He never took the beds apart and we only had two wash clothes the whole cruise. And we would take those and not replace them, when if they were hung up, that we didn’t want him to take them, he took them. When we were packing we only had two comment cards so I tried to call him to bring another one but his line was busy and stayed busy, so I called the Pursers and she called him and he came and handed me customs forms! I could have gotten those myself, I told him we needed comment cards and he had those underneath. It was like pulling teeth! He didn’t get such a good comment but everyone else on the ship did.

Anyway we finally got called and after going down the blocked hallway we went down the other and made it off the ship into the terminal. We showed our ids soon as you enter the terminal, then you go down the escalator and then stand in line to get your luggage. We had to wait a few minutes for a porter to come and he loaded our bags on the cart and took us into the customs area. If your not using a porter you have to go into a different customs area. He told my mom once we are down she can go get the car and we would be waiting for her outside the terminal. My mom did have extra liquor as she bought some on the ship to but we were not asked to pay any extra. They just scanned and stamped out passport and we were done. We went outside while she went to get the car and that was it.

All in all it was a great cruise despite the few problems. We never let any of it get to us at all. I did want to mention at people were winning in the Casino left and right. Every time you turn around someone was cashing out a huge amount of coins and cheering. My mom won $180 on the first night and won I think $100 the last night. I didn’t win that much, I actually came out behind but oh well. I was kind of mad, I was playing on one machine earlier in the day on the last sea day , winning a bit. Came back that night and this guy won the jackpot on the machine! That could have been me! Oh well. Better luck next time. I did learn that the 25 cent machine have better payouts than the rest. So yes people do win in the Casino.

Also, I got a 45 day letter after writing to carnival after our last cruise. I in turn lost it but was able to call and they found they I had one. So I picked bar credits as my gift. When we got to the room, there was a note saying it would be given to me at dinner. But I forgot we changed tables so I didn’t get it on the first night. I went to the pursers desk the next day and they said to talk to the dining host that night at dinner. Before I got to chance, she came over to me and had it for me right there. We used them later and yes we were asked to pay the difference which was like 80 cent or something like that. So I got a Strawberry Daiquiri in a souvenir glass and the credit was for 5.25 so we paid about 80 cents I think.

I also for the life of me can not remember what night was the past guest party , nor can I find my letter but we got pins with our letters. The party was nice, they showed the video of all the ships and everyone cheered for the ships they been on, the Dream was added to the end. The drinks were flowing plenty I really liked the Melon baller and the blue Margaritas. I think I got a little tipsy that night J .

I can’t think of anything else to add, so if you have any questions, please let me know.

Great review, thanks for sharing!! Your past guest party sounds just like ours...I guess all carnival ones are the same. We even had the same drinks offered which was on the Liberty. But I didn't like the two that you did. LOL I always feel I should like Margarita's....they look so good....but I just don't like them. Although, I did force one. LOL

I was suprised to hear about your room stewart. Everything I have read from so far---says that all the service was exceptional. I hate that happened to you and I hope that doesn't happen to us. I am going on the Fantasy March 16.

it really shocked me too. Hopefully he got his act together for the next sailing. The only times I ever saw him were in the hall and he was on his cell phone and when he came to bring me the comment cards. My mom did tell him to move the beds but i guess he forgot . who well. Some people it might have ruined thier cruise, for us we just brushed it off. everything can't be prefect!:D

Well, I understand that no one can expect perfection and I certainly plan to enjpy my cruise---especially, with it being my 1st cruise. There are 3 of us staying in my room. Me, my mother and my son. I was planning on my 12 yr old son having the upper and the beds being seperated for me and my mother. Hope this is possible!!! Were the beds comfortable? I know from your review you state you stayed on a different deck than I am. I am on the Rivera deck---an ocean-view 6a room.

We stayed on R deck on the Sensation. We didn't feel movement there either but we were more towrads the middle of the ship, but it was an Oceanview as well. The beds were amazing, everyone knocked right out on this. My mom said she noticed that most of the rooms near us all had the beds mad into queens so maybe others had the problem too. I would just ask and double ask if not. Or contact the desk if the stewart can't be reached. My friend was on the upper and she liked it, there was a ladder for her to climb up. if our room was made right one bed would have been under the upper and one by the window. Have a great time and enjoy your cruise! When are you going? i hope its when Tex is still on.

I am going during Spring Break on March 16th. I don't think Tex will be on anymore. From what I have read there is a lady who will come back to the Fantasy---has been on it before. She is supposed to be good, I just can't remember her name.
