Steak Restaurant near Intercontinental BA

There are many good steak restaurants in close proximity to the InterContinental. Walking distance is a relative term. Cabs are very cheap and safe so there is really no need to limit yourself to walking distance however you define it.

Here is a link to the Oleo guide for restaurants that specialize in parrilla - steakhouses. http://www.guiaoleo.com.ar/list.php?navby=multiply&kitchen=13. Notice that the 2nd highest rated parrilla is El Maipu located in the 400 block of Av San Juan in San Telmo about 12 blocks from the hotel.

Owl61, Thank you for the response. Do you know if cabs accept US currency? Also, are the streets in that area safe to walk? Our other concern is not speaking or reading spanish. We really want to try a steak restaurant and it doesn't appear the hotel has one.

You're welcome.

Your hotel will no doubt have cabs waiting by the portal. If not, the doorman will hail one for you , no doubt a radio cab. ALways use radio cabs. The signage on the side or the top of the car is easy to spot.

Some cabbies might accept US $ , but don't presume they will. Better to have some pesos. There are ATMs on every block so just use your ATM card to get 180 or 230 pesos. The rate of exchange will be good - better than what the hotel will give you - although your bank may charge you a small fee for using a foreign bank ATM and or a foreign currency conversion fee. Why the odd amount (180, 230)? Because you will want small bills to pay the cab. Never give a big note to pay for a cab ride. There are too many cabbies that give counterfeit bills for change.

The streets around your hotel and in your barrio are generally safe. BA is not known to be a particularly dangerous city for tourists. The streets of BA where the good hotels are located are as safe as or safer than the streets of any US city, which is not to say an ugly incident could never happen - just as it could happen in San Francisco, Seattle , LA etc. To minimize the risk of something bad happening, take taxis, but remember to always hail radio taxis. Avoid the others.

Owl61, Do you have a favorite restaurant for steak? KC

There are several I like. La Cabrera, 1880, El Mirasol de la Recova, Los Platitos, El Trapiche, Rio Alba, but my favorite place to eat steak is my cousin, Ricki's, when he makes a barbeque in his home.
