olson Posted November 20, 2004 #1 Share Posted November 20, 2004 Jamaica sounds very scary to me. I just finished reading this link: http://www.virtualtourist.com/vt/a56/8/
alaboard Posted November 21, 2004 #2 Share Posted November 21, 2004 we were in montego bay last week and found the cab drivers and store owners extremely pushy to have you spend your money on their services, so be prepared to stand and discuss why you're not interested or just merely wave them off and keep walking:(
cali-croozer Posted November 22, 2004 #3 Share Posted November 22, 2004 Jamaica is one of the ports that you want to take an escorted tour, through the ship or with one of the guides recommended on this board, or go to a place like Sunset Beach. We were there on our first cruise, almost 20 years ago. We were on a ship's tour and were still offerred drugs.....we were going through a garden and we thought the person to the side of the trail was with our group. Our guide quickly sent him on his way. Just around the corner were police, who the guide said, were there to bust us if we had bought drugs. It was a set up for tourists. On the scheduled shopping stop, the shop owners were very pushy; you couldn't just look at anything. The women kept putting hats on my head. And, you can't ask any questions either. We asked somebody if they knew where we could buy a music cassette tape. He then wanted money for his answer. We are going to Jamaica again next summer. We're either taking the Canopy Tour and then directly back to the ship. Or, we'll take a taxi to Sunset Beach and hang out for the day. It's all about being informed. We really didn't know anything about Jamaica before our first cruise..........no cruise critic boards, that's for sure!
