El Rodadero Beach in Santa Marta

El Rodadero was my favorite spring break spot when I was in high school. You can definitely take a Taxi from Santa Marta. If you are staying overnight, I definitely recommend you hit the nightclubs in front of the beach and on the 2-3 streets behind that main street. Great partying! You can rent apartments by the night and it's much cheaper than staying at a hotel, but you might need to have someone who speaks Spanish to find one because the way I always rented those apartments was I walked aroud the area where I wanted to stay until someone came up to me and asked me if I needed to rent an apartment. If it's the season, there'll be people offering apartments all over the place, I've never been there off season, you might have to ask around.

Regarding safety, El Rodadero is pretty safe. I mean, don't leave your stuff unattended at the beach while you get in the water but there is no need to feel in danger if you stay in areas where common sense tells you is not dangerous.
