Tampa Port and Airport

I am taking a cruise out of Tampa later this year and just wondering how far the airport is to the port, and where are some good hotels to stay at. We are flying in on a Saturday for a Sunday Cruise. Not really looking for anything to do in Tampa except rest after a long flight from the west coast. just a good hotel and some restaurants (nothing really fancy) that are in walking distance.

How far is Tampa from Disney World?

Easy ones first:

Airport to port is a little less than 10 miles. Cab fare is $25, flat rate, from one to the other. Travel time outside of rush hour is 15 to 20 minutes, if you get caught in rush hour it can add anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes, but if you arrive Saturday & cruise Sunday, traffic won't be an issue for you.

Tampa to Disney World is around 60 miles, almost all Interstate. Barring traffic issues, a little over an hour drive.

Hotels is a much tougher issue, since things vary widely based on price, tastes, etc. If you're arriving in the evening & don't plan/want to do much, I'd suggest one of a couple of areas:

You could stay close to the port, at either the Embassy Suites or Marriott. Both are just a few minutes from the cruise port. If you want to get out a little, you can hop on the trolley & go to either the Channelside Entertainment complex or to Ybor City (area of town with a number of bars & restaurants). These places are at the upper end of the price scale in Tampa.

Alternatively, you could stay at one of the hotels in the Rocky Point area (closer to the airport). There are a few restaurants near them, they are generally cheaper, and you'd still have a relatively easy cab ride to the port the next day.

If you scan the board, there's a thread on Tampa Info that has a lot of stuff on the various hotel options.
