Norwegian Dawn made an unscheduled port stop at St. Croix the first week of December, 2004 from about 3pm to 8 pm. It was really quite lovely; there was no time to arrange shore excursions, but the local (Frederiksted) tourist office quickly arranged for walking tours of the town, and we did a little shopping, had a local beer in a little cafe, toured the old Danish fort and an 1840's church and watched a tremendous sunset. The town looks a little down on its luck, but there was a fine rebuilding program going on for the port area, which should be very nice when finished. I think our ship left without some folks who had taken off for Christiansted and didn't make it back in time(judging by the announcements.) We liked it...it was as low key and un-touristy as you can get...but other people from our cruise thought it was rundown and not worth the visit...

We are thinking of taking a long weekend in the Caribbean in the summer. I seem to hear a consistent theme from people who step off cruise ships to St. Croix - it's not worth it. But is it really that much different from St. Thomas in the beach and watersport offerings? My father-in-law has labeled it not worth visiting from his brief cruise stop there. It sounds like other cruise ship passengers have mad the same assessment. But are they stepping off the ship, not seeing a Polo outlet store, and making the conclusion that their time is better served elsewhere?

If we are looking for a Caribbean island without a lot of commercialism, with excellent snorkelling and kayaking opportunities, and at a reasonable rate, wouldn't St. Croix fit the bill? Delta begins flying direct there this month which makes it doubly appealing.

If you are looking to get away from crowded, touristy islands then St. Croix is the place to come and stay. We are not nearly as commercial as St. Thomas. This is an excellent place to come for diving, snorkeling and kayaking. If you come in the summer it will be nice and quiet, but not deserted. Lots to see and do: water activities, horseback riding and nice shops. I hope you will consider visiting us and see for yourself.

We will be cruising in December; one stop is in St. Thomas. We've visited St. Thomas and St. John many times and are thinking about venturing over to St. Croix. It looks like the flights run fairly often, but how reliable are they? We'll be in port until early evening (St. Thomas). What return flight would you suggest? We don't want to get "stranded" over in St. Croix and miss the ship! I think going over by air would be more reliable (and much faster!!) than the ferry that runs a few days a week. Does this sound doable?

I've lived on St. Croix for almost 3 years now - it is not a tourist island like St. Thomas so if one is expecting that they will be disappointed. There are plenty of nice places to stay and eat and the boardwalk offers some shopping.

As to flying or ferrying over from St. Thomas - that would depend on how brave you are. If flying you would have to take a sea plane, the airport wouldn't be an option obvioulsy timewise for a day trip off the ship. While the ferry takes longer - about 1 hour and 20 minutes - it is usually always on schedule. The ferry or the seaplane are both close to the boardwalk and from there you can hail taxi's to take you sightseeing anywhere else. Hope this is helpful.
