Lushpuppy Posted February 17, 2009 #1 Share Posted February 17, 2009 Okay, I have had enough for one day, so please dont shoot the messenger:D I thought maybe someone else would have it mentioned it on here, but not as yet ..so here goes... We were told on our last explorer cruise, that the cruise going out on Feb 13th, was to be a test pilot non smoking cruise. They were going to ban smoking in all indoor lounges including Dizzys, The Casino and Chamber. The Barmen were not too happy about it. It seems their tips and takings are way down now in the Schooner Bar since it went non smoking, and they were dead against it. I am only repeating the talk on board. (one was an officer who quoted this) We asked several members of staff and they confirmed it, but lets see what the cruisers say when they return. Personally (for all my opinion is worth), as there are to be over 1000 kids on board, maybe this was just a good time for RCI to have a non smoking family cruise. We did ask was this a permanent thing, and the answer was no, only for this cruise. BUT, if you are a smoker and found this out at boarding point, mmmmmmm...can guess the outcome! As I say, dont shoot the messenger!! Just for those of you who DO smoke, and it does make a difference to your vacation, suggest you keep an eye on upcoming events. As I say, dont take this as Gospel, lets see what the Explorers sat when they return.
Moondawgie Posted February 17, 2009 #2 Share Posted February 17, 2009 I sailed the Paradise when it was smoke-free and it was great. For a non-smoker, it was so refreshing to go anywhere without the smell of smoke - even the casino. It didn't work. As you stated, the bars suffer. I can see where it would be good for people who really cannot stand the smell of smoke to have a choice. Even the cabins smelled better. I doubt the world will go non-smoking anytime soon, though. So, there has to be a place to do it.
Lushpuppy Posted February 17, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted February 17, 2009 I have my first meeting with my stop smoking councelor tomorrow:) I vowed after this cruise I would make a serious attempt. So sticking to my vow, and had arranged this before my cruise so that as soon as I returned, I would go for it...here goes:eek: So next cruise, hoping to be a non smoker! Debde Posted February 17, 2009 #4 Share Posted February 17, 2009 this cruise. BUT, if you are a smoker and found this out at boarding point, mmmmmmm...can guess the outcome!Just for those of you who DO smoke, and it does make a difference to your vacation, suggest you keep an eye on upcoming events. OMG that could be the horror of it all in my world!! Listen-I surely don't mind having options where I can smoke. If RC went non-smoking-I'd have to move on-I'd be sad :( but I'd go elsewhere without raising havoc on the bb ;). If I found out boarding-OMG-I think my DH would hop right on the next plane outa there!!! LOL Seriously When you say keep an eye on upcoming events-Would something like a test drive be on the site in ample time if you had to switch?? cruiserbryce Posted February 17, 2009 #5 Share Posted February 17, 2009 I would enjoy a non smoking cruise very much but at the same time understand why this may not be something the lines jump at since so much of their revenue comes from people sitting in the bar or casino while smoking it up. For those that smoke they could have to take a break a go outside to smoke...creating a chance that they wont come back in and continue to gamble
Moondawgie Posted February 17, 2009 #6 Share Posted February 17, 2009 Good luck, lushpuppy. I quit cold turkey in 1986 and never looked back. The trick is to ride out the cravings somehow and once you get past them, keep going! I know it's very difficult. I quit in 1972 when I got pregnant and then started in 1976 again ... big mistake. So, then in 1986 it was OVER!

For those that smoke they could have to take a break a go outside to smoke...creating a chance that they wont come back in and continue to gamble There is no smoking in the casino or in interior bars on Celebrity and the casino on Solstice was more than busy. The smokers they lose are more than replaced by the non-smokers would not set foot in the place beforehand. Mike
jst Posted February 17, 2009 #9 Share Posted February 17, 2009 We would welcome the idea of non-smoking in the casino, unfortunately the ventilation systems in that area do not do an adequate job of filtering out the smoke. My DH smoked for many years, now we live in a smoke free house etc., and it really is nice.:) We seldom go into the casino because of the smoking. So sticking to my vow, and had arranged this before my cruise so that as soon as I returned, I would go for it...here goes:eek: So next cruise, hoping to be a non smoker! Wow! I wish you all the luck in the world in your endeavor. When my DH and I came to the conclusion that we were going to quit smoking was to go on a future trip to Hawaii...that we wouldn't have been able to afford otherwise. We saved the equivalent of 2 cartons a week at $50 a week. (That was back in 1994.) After 10 months that cig money paid for 4 plane tickets and the lodging for 10 days. (Our children deserved it as much as we did for putting up with it for years. :) ) If our method helps you then by all means do this.... Go to your local video store and/or travel agent and rent/borrow any video you can on cruising, or a future destination that you might have in mind. Whenever you get that urge, pop in a video and remind yourself of what you will have when you are done. My DH sat on the edge of the couch and rocked, and rocked......! And take that cigarette money and drop it into a piggy bank for a future cruise, or lots of cruise credits to spend. It worked extremely well for us, as we quit in 1994 and have gone on vacation almost every year since. GOOD LUCK!! birdylady Posted February 17, 2009 #11 Share Posted February 17, 2009 Speaking as an ex-smoker, I can completely understand why people want Non-Smoking Everything and everyplace. But, I think this is something that needs to be determined by each business. That being said, I hope for the fairness of smokers that like to cruise, that the cruise lines maintain at least one place on each ship that allows smokers the oportunity to smoke. Just make it available 24/7 during the trip and have it well seperated or ventilated so folks that don't want to/can't be near smoke don't have to be. Good luck to you :) I stopped in 1988 and have not touched a cigarette since. My husband and I quit together, cold turkey. It's all mind over matter and if you really have your mind made up it's not so bad. I just kept up the mantra "I will never smoke a cigarette again in my life" and every day got easier and easier. The funny thing is, it's been over 20 years and we are still discussing the same issues. I had a lot of societal and peer pressure to stop (adult friends, we're not kids!). One would think by now that this issue could be resolved since people know the harm they are doing to themselves and others. I'm grateful neither of my children smoke and I do believe it is because we don't and none of our friends smoke.

Lushpuppy Posted February 17, 2009 Author #14 Share Posted February 17, 2009 Thank you all for the good wishes! I did stop before so know I can do it. Started again when I lost my baby a few years ago and havent quit since. BUT... I set myself this challenge, so here goes. I think this time I am going on Champix, will see what the councelor advises. Thank you for the well wishes!!! I am sick of it.. just sick of smoking, and want to live, and now that my daughter is engaged..I sure want to be around to be a grandma one day:) Thats kind of giving me an extra incentive. And yes, plan to save the money and if I put on weight, then at least I can afford the lipo :D Its not tomorrow sorry, its Thursday.. will let you all know how it goes! I wont let anyone take my photo .. I HATE seeing that pic of me with a cig in hand YUK YUK YUK! Makes me cringe everytime, so this is it, no more whinging for me about non smoking cruises and yes, would like to be able to go anywhere, be anywhere, and not be bound to that need for a cigarette. THANK YOU!!! But yes, If they had said to me boarding our cruise we couldnt smoke I know I would have not got on the ship... I would have drove everyone insane:eek: So I do wish the cruiselines would be way up front with their policies. Who knows..lets wait and see what the explorers say when they return from this cruise.
BobBeaSea Posted February 17, 2009 #15 Share Posted February 17, 2009 From what the OP posted, the sailing she heard about is not a smoke free test, it is an indoor smoke free test. Smokers would be smoking in their normal places on open decks. For the OP, good luck with the quitting attempt - it isn't easy.

Rare TPKeller Posted February 17, 2009 #17 Share Posted February 17, 2009 I just kept up the mantra "I will never smoke a cigarette again in my life" and every day got easier and easier. I really think there is something to this. I heard this once: Unless you determine ahead of time that you will stay on course at all cost, eventually something will come along that will take you off course. This can be applied to any major life endeavor. Theron

spbflseas Posted February 17, 2009 #20 Share Posted February 17, 2009 All you need to know is that Carnival's Paradise, when it was smoke free, had the highest occupancy rate of any ship in Carnival's fleet. However, it also had one of the lowest amounts of onboard revenue of any ship in the fleet.
Lushpuppy Posted February 17, 2009 Author #21 Share Posted February 17, 2009 Aw... loving the encouragement THANK YOU! An electric cigarette, actually its so good I wont use mine as people stare:eek: They are brilliant! They come with a vapour chamber which is rechargable. You get strengths of nicotine from normal down to zero. You do actually inhale a harmless vapour so do get the "smoking" fix without the tar and if you wish without the nico. Certainly without the poisens! My problem is with it, that people DO stare as its so new and LOOKS as if its smoke, its NOT, its a harmless light vapour. I just get people stare at me if I use it as they think I am smoking! You get a passport thing to carry with you as it is legal to use in all non smoking places as it is NOT smoking. I do hope it takes off as would be so useful to so many people. I think they originated in Hollland. I am sure the US must have them..oh THEY DO..my friend had one when we were out in NYC and hers was even better than mine!!! I guess if you did a search on electric cigarette you would find something in your country. Yeah..they are great! BUT me..I dont want a crutch this time, I want to STOP..PERIOD!:)

DH and I laughed almost every night at dinner as this lovely scottish couple would stop at our table every night to make a comment about me.....we called them my dining room stocker's...LOL Wonderful folks!!!!! Interesting what you heard. DH & I where in the Cigar lounge one afternoon and someone in there commented that they where told it was going to become a smoking lounge. I know..was hoping you would find us and come say hello... not see my darling husband lifting his kilt then in the disco??? :D He had a plaid on, was only one on ship wearing the plaid as well as the kilt? Mind you, next time I am thinking of leaving it at home. I spend ages dolling myself up and NO ONE comments on me..ONLY HIM!!!!!! ;) In fact, I am sick of his big head ..he spent ages hunting the photo rack for the one of HIMSELF in his kilt and plaid...he never found it..shame eh:D Were you ever up in Dizzys around 7.30 - 8.30pm??
