What to do in St Kitts (not a tour)?

It seems like most of the posts on here are all about either full scale tours or beaches that are kind of crappy.

We're sailing the Victory on the Souther Caribbean cruise in July and have something planned for every port but this one. (Mostly just beach days, shouldn't be too tiring, but another reason we're not looking to just hang on a beach)

I haven't seen anything that looks that interesting for St Kitts though. Suggestions?

We're an early 30's couple, in good shape. (one problem with the private tours is that they'd be really expensive for 1 couple.)

Thanks!!

Hi I was in St. Kitts last March & am returning this March on the Celeb Solstice! Last March we booked an "island tour" w/a nice young giude named Roysten Stevens for the day. I myself DW & 2 DDs. Think it was $120.00? He took us into the jungle, to a volcano, held a baby green monkey, saw a botanical garden, batik shop, & drove to Southern tip & visited Reggae Beach Bar. Saw simply amazing sights.

This March we are doing something different with him, a snorkel tour. He's charging us 40 pp adults, 20 pp kids. Includes beer, soda, juice, and sandwich lunch. Which I think is a great deal.He's knowledgable, enjoyable, & safe. Try him out you will not be disapointed.

I'll be posting a review of the snorkeling trip upon our return.

We went for a wonderful time to Rawlins Plantion and spent the rest of the day at the Beach House on Turtle Beach. The food was wonderful, the beach lovely and you have a great view to Nevis.

You can do that either by car (we rented one) or by taxi.

other than touring and beaches, there isn't a whole lot to do on St Kitt's. It's pretty rustic and unspoiled. Tourism is relatively new to the little island since their sugar cane industry stopped a few years ago. We have been twice on cruises to the beautiful island. The first time we took a cab tour of the salt pond end of the island (about and hour) and then had him drop us at the Marriott resort which is an absolutely beautiful place. We paid about $130 for 8 of us to share a one bedroom suite for the day and had full use of the resort. The beach is beautiful as are the pools. DJ playing around the pool all day, good food, swim up bar, nice casino, etc.

This past year we emailed our friendly taxi/tour guy again since he was so wonderful the last time. He met us at the pier and for $200 for the 5 of us, we had him all day long. We stopped where we wanted to, he toured the kids through the rain forest pointing out all the native vegetation (he's certified to tour folks through the forest by the government), went to the black rock cliffs, saw the hurricane damage and later had him drop us off at Cockleshell with a pick up time for a couple of hours of beach time. He took his cues from us and there was no rushing when we wanted to linger a bit and the views were unbelievable everywhere he took us. I am not a tour person and hate being shuffled on a time line from place to place but never felt that way with Jim. To do the same thing with a ship's excursion for the 5 of us would have been a lot more for much less time. Here's his email if you're interested in customizing whatever kind of day you want;

Thanks for an answer that answers the question. We might check into it, or maybe we'll just stay on the ship!

We are going in March - There is a stable that does beach rides we are looking at - try their chamber of commerce for ideas.

There are several car rental agencies on the island. You need a local license to drive which is available at the car rental agency. Driving is on the left. It is a great way to see the island at your own pace. Watch out for the goats,sheep & cows! The main roads are pretty good if a bit narrow in places. I would reserve a car on-line because during the season if you just walk in, you may not get what you want.

If you are active and want to do things on the island, not just sit at a beach, I would recommend Royston. He’ll customize the day to match your interests. We walked in the rainforest, which was beautiful, and he took us to some of the best snorkeling of our cruise. Just tell him whatever you’d like to do, and he knows where on the island is best to do it.
