Push-to-Talk feature on cell instead of walkie talkies?

We want to keep track of each other during our upcoming cruise. Has anyone used the "Push-to-Talk" feature on their cell phone instead of using walkie talkies? Is the signal strong enough to work on the ship? Would really like some first-hand experiences.

Thanks... Sandy

I don't have experience with this, but generally, I would think your phone would need to be on a GSM network.

I found an article (can't post the url - google "cell phone coverage on cruise gsm" and there is a site that starts with "true") ... the article is from 2006. Sounds like some boats/cruise-lines might have coverage. You can probably ask your TA or cruise line.
