Sandy R Posted February 18, 2009 #1 Share Posted February 18, 2009 We want to keep track of each other during our upcoming cruise. Has anyone used the "Push-to-Talk" feature on their cell phone instead of using walkie talkies? Is the signal strong enough to work on the ship? Would really like some first-hand experiences. Thanks... Sandy
kitty9 Posted February 18, 2009 #2 Share Posted February 18, 2009 Our P to T feature did not work on our Verizon phones on the ship.
Ephraim Posted February 19, 2009 #3 Share Posted February 19, 2009 Push to talk is on Verizon's CDMA network.
vavasmom Posted February 19, 2009 #4 Share Posted February 19, 2009 Push to Talk (PtoT) on a cell phone is not really a walkie talkie. It uses a feature of the cell network. If you don't have cell coverage your (PtoT) will not work either.
Sandy R Posted February 19, 2009 Author #5 Share Posted February 19, 2009 I have the push to talk feature on my cell phone. I was just wondering if it will work well in replacing a walkie talkie on the ship.
AgVball Posted February 19, 2009 #6 Share Posted February 19, 2009 I don't have experience with this, but generally, I would think your phone would need to be on a GSM network. I found an article (can't post the url - google "cell phone coverage on cruise gsm" and there is a site that starts with "true") ... the article is from 2006. Sounds like some boats/cruise-lines might have coverage. You can probably ask your TA or cruise line.
