How much is it to get to Rima's and is it worth it?

We are going to be in St Maarten and I have read that Bernard's tour takes people to Rima's and that they have the same souvenirs that other shops sell, but they are about 1/2 price.

Where is Rima's? How much is cab fare there? Is it easy to get a cab back to P'burg? Is it worth going there? Is there anything you can tell me about Rima's? We don't want to do an island tour, just go there.

Thanks so much.

Thanks so much for your answers. I guess I didn't realize it was close to "downtown" Phillipsburg. I know I am directionally challenged, but if I take the water taxi where do I get off and then how do I get there?

We usually get off at the stop near the beach in P"burg. I heard, but haven't gone that far, there is a second stop. Do we still get off at the usual stop and then what?

Sorry to be such a pain. Thanks again.

The water taxi stop that you mention 'near the beach' is at the Captain Hodge Pier (The Little Pier) that you can see on the map. Wathey Square is the little plaza in front of the Court House.

Rima's is #17 on the map.

If you walk two blocks past the Court House, where you will run into the parking lot, and turn left, you will be going West on Cannegieter Street. After you have walked two or three blocks, you will see the large Rima's Building ahead of you. (I have this photo somewhere, but can't find it right now).

You can't get to Rima's from Cannegieter, but will have to jog off to your right one more block to the Pondfill Road. That's where Rima's is located, on Pondfill Road, NOT on Back Street.

p.s. If you happen to come across some of my earlier postings about not walking to Rima's, they were when they were located in a different, much farther location.

Gary,

Thanks so much for the directions. I don't know that my husband, who is going to have a knee replacement when we come back, will be able to walk that far. Perhaps instead of taking the water taxi we will just get a cab near the ship.

We do want to go to the little casino near the pier also so I have to figure out how to get back from Rima's and to the casino. Thanks again for being so helpful.

If you are referring to the Beach Plaza Casino at Wathey Square (Little Pier), my understanding that it is closing soon to move to the far end of town.

There was a discussion of Casinos in this previous thread. There are some broken links, but the basic information is still good.

Gary,

Thanks again for the info. I think we will take a cab to Rima's and then if the Beach Plaza Casino is closed, we will try Coliseum. Our cruise is a week from yesterday, so hopefully Beach Plaza will still be open.

I appreciate your taking the time to answer my questions.

We get in at 8am. What time does stores open downtown. We want to shop then go to Orient Beach for the day. The ship leaves at 6pm. How much time should we give to get back to the ship from Orient?

Thanks

I would highly recommend that you flip your day over.

The shops downtown will be opening between 9 and 10. By then you could already be set up on the beach and enjoying the day.

Then after you spend as much time there as you like, pack up and head back downtown for shopping. Maybe a 20 minute trip. You'll be just minutes from the ship at that point, so no worry about last minute traffic problems.

Two other things. It does get warmer/hotter in the afternoons, no matter what time of year, and do you really want to haul all of your shopping purchases to the beach and have to watch over them all day?

p.s. Please don't go shopping in wet swimsuits. Everyone would appreciate at least a coverup.:)

Does Rima's accept credit cards? Or should I be prepared with cash? I think most places accept major credit cards, but I want to be prepared.

Most Credit Card companies are now charging a 3% or more foreign transaction fee. I know B of A does.

Yes, and right now they're having a closeout on various visors and hats with your choice of numerous islands embroidered on them. I noticed Antiga, Jamaica, Tortola, Dominica, and many others as well as generic 'Caribbean' choices.

Your price, out the door, $1.00 US.

We walked to Rima's in July. Was it worth it? I don't think so. A nice walk though! Rima's is just like any other beachware store in Daytona, Panama City or Cocoa Beach. They're a dime a dozen in FL. All imported Chinese junk! The prices ARE good but the merchandise is really dated. Just my personal opinion.
