Hi Sarah,

I've read it's respectful if women don't wear skimpy clothing in the villages..if you're planning an excursion to Ekasup Village in Vila for instance.

You'll see the local women wearing 'island dresses' , which cover up lots. I believe these dresses became popular when the missionaries arrived and stuck.

Enjoy your cruise.

It is very nice of you to be concerned.

The ports you mention see tourists all the time. Shorts and tops are quite acceptable. I think (for instance) a bikini top worn with tiny tight shorts wouldn't be suitable. In Lifou, if you want to go swimming/snorkelling, you have to wear your swimming costume from the ship because there aren't any change rooms. Obviously everyone wears a cover-up of some kind, or clothes over the top while you are dry. Don't be concerned about Noumea - they have a topless beach quite close to town.
