teamfour Posted November 23, 2004 #1 Share Posted November 23, 2004 I have been offered a shore dive in Kihei, Maui that uses scooters. How difficult is it to use?
sportsterjohn Posted November 23, 2004 #2 Share Posted November 23, 2004 they are fun, keep in mind though that they are heavy so you will have to make some drastic adjustments in your weighting!
teamfour Posted November 24, 2004 Author #3 Share Posted November 24, 2004 Thanks sportsterjohn! I read up on the scooter and the one the dive shop uses has 1 lb. neg buoyancy. Not bad.
cre8tive1 Posted November 24, 2004 #4 Share Posted November 24, 2004 I found them fun, but they made my arms tired. All I could take was about 10 minutes. It was fun to do once, but I don't think I would rush to do them again. Free=yes...Pay=No. :o
robstrash Posted November 30, 2004 #5 Share Posted November 30, 2004 I've never used one, but read that you really have to be careful about your depth as you can easily and quickly change depth. Be very careful rising too quickly.
SandDollar Laura Posted December 3, 2004 #6 Share Posted December 3, 2004 Here in Cozumel, we use the Tyger Ray Scooters as part of a "power snorkeling tour" that we offer. The response to the scooters for snorkeling has been fantastic!! Like flying underwater!
michaelaz Posted December 6, 2004 #7 Share Posted December 6, 2004 they are fun, keep in mind though that they are heavy so you will have to make some drastic adjustments in your weighting! ? Most are neg. buoyant or neutral within 1 lb, please do not give out advice that MAY cost someone their life. I would advise you to make you to make sure your DM AND Dive Shop are certified by PADI,NAWI or SSI,dont feel bad asking, they ask for your cert. right ? This is your life your dealing with. fireballmo29w8 Posted December 15, 2004 #8 Share Posted December 15, 2004 I own one and they are pretty heavy in the water. If the shop has an option for floatation take it. That will balance out the scooter and make it ride better. I clip mine to my BC with some line and a brass clips . The BC gives it lift and the BC harness takes the shock of using one. My guess is it is 3-4 pounds heavy in the water. If cliped to your BC then it is a very smoth ride. Clip at the top of the Handle. If you try to hold it without support it will make you very tired. :p
