Mermaid 2 Posted April 18, 2004 #2 Share Posted April 18, 2004 From The dock at Naples (Beverello), there are both ferries and hydrofoils to both Capri and Sorrento. There is also a train to Sorrento (the Circumsuviana) which takes about an hour and a half (making all local stops) not including the fact that you would need to take a bus from the dock to the train station to get the train from Naples. The train would not be faster if you are starting at the dock in Naples.
Rare Hlitner Posted April 18, 2004 #3 Share Posted April 18, 2004 Do not take the slow ferries anywhere! Always buy tickets on the hydrofoils. There are some hydrofoils that will run directly to Sorrento from Naples, and you can also get there via Capri. The best route is going to depend on the schedule at the time you arrive at the ferry terminal (a short walk from the cruise pier). As previously mentioned, the train to Sorrento is on the private Circumvesuiania Line which goes from the main train station about 1 1/2 miles from the pier. These trains are nothing special, and finding the right train can be a little intimitatin in the large station. If you take the train, make sure you double check with the conductor that you are getting on the right train. Also keep in mind that you will probably need more time on Capri than you think. If you plan on going to the Blue Grotto, this can take more time than planned. And if you want to take the chair lift from Anacapri up the mountain (we love this ride and the view) you need to allow a couple of hours just for this little excursion. Naples is a great port because of all the nearby attractions,, but it is also frustrating if you try to cram too much into a single day. Nidwaldner Posted April 22, 2004 #5 Share Posted April 22, 2004 The Circumvesuiania is under the train station in Naples. It's a commuter line and is easily found by following the signs down.
