doctordi Posted March 4, 2009 #1 Share Posted March 4, 2009 I'll be in Freeport on Wednesday March 25 and I will be going solo with 3 kids age 5, 6, and 8. I'm trying to decide what to do and the Bahamas board hasn't been much help. There doesn't seem to be a lot of choices in Freeport since only the 8yo and I snorkle. I would love to take him out but I would have to leave the other two on the boat while we swam - I'm a bit uncomfortable with that. The children don't want to do the dolphin encounter (too scared) and they tolerate sightseeing for about 15 mins. We will probably end up on the beach but which one? I understand that the Westin sells day passes for $20 but $80 to go to the beach seems a bit steep. We don't need a lot of amenities but a bathroom would be nice. Does anyone have any experience or suggestions for me?
CKEA_Cruising_Family Posted March 4, 2009 #2 Share Posted March 4, 2009 We stayed on the ship and enjoyed a quiet day when we were docked in Freeport. I'd probably opt for that again if we were on a ship that stopped there. There didn't appear to be much right where the ship docked. If I remember correctly it was a 12 mile cab ride to get to a beach area and that didn't seem worth it for us.
boulders Posted March 4, 2009 #3 Share Posted March 4, 2009 I'm also a solo mom who has 3 kids. When I can't find any worthwhile child friendly excursions, we stay on the ship. I don't have enough hands and eyes to look after 3 kids at the beach. On port days, you can have the pool and other ship amenities pretty much to yourselves. It's nice to be able to explore the ship and not have to deal with the crowds.
crusinmama06 Posted March 4, 2009 #4 Share Posted March 4, 2009 Awwww don't stay on the ship. This is what I did in Freeport. I stepped off the ship and asked for a taxi to "Our Lucaya Sheraton". Our Lucaya is a marketplace. The Sheraton and the Westin hotels are side by side. You walk through the Sheraton and out the other side to the beach. You can't use the Sheraton's pools (you would need to buy a wrist band for pool access)...but you can eat at their patio restaurant and use their bathrooms...and beach. No charge for the beach. ;) The area was full of people with Carnival towels. So it must be known by lots of cruisers. Taxi ride was approx $5 per person. This is what it looked like. It makes a great beach day.
doctordi Posted March 5, 2009 Author #5 Share Posted March 5, 2009 That sounds like just what I need. Thanks. I understand about the shared van to the downtown area, but how hard is it to get one back?
crusinmama06 Posted March 5, 2009 #6 Share Posted March 5, 2009 That sounds like just what I need. Thanks. I understand about the shared van to the downtown area, but how hard is it to get one back? That is the funny part. We were told to walk right next door to the casino and there would be plenty of taxis. But we just walked back outside to the front of the Sheraton. We said we needed a taxi to the bell hop guys at the front of the hotel. A LIMO driver said I'll take you for the same price. I said "But we're covered in sand". He said he didn't mind and he opened the door for us. So we rode in a LIMO back to the ship. It was funny. The kids were loving it. But if you have problems there, the casino is literally steps away. And there are plenty of taxis there.
