renting Jeep

We are planning on renting a Jeep when in Grand Cayman.

Avis has a good deal.

Does any one know how far it is from the port

(we will be on Valor) the rental co. is? Best way to get there?

Anyone have any experience(good or bad) that will help with our decision?

How difficult is it to drive the island?

Any "must see" places?

We have been there before but just did the "water thing".

So is there a rental co. at or near the port?

it looks like you have to walk to the blue iguana, which isnt far, then take a coutesy bus to the rental locale, which is about a five minute ride.

thanks for the info, doesn't look as bad as I thought, someone told me it was a 1/2 hour drive to Avis and I was thinking, "the island isn't that big!" We have visited many islands but have never rented a car, thought it would be fun.

How difficult is it to drive the island? Once you get away from town there really isn't much traffic but here's some things to consider.

- Here in the US I have a collector car from England and the steering is on the right hand side. Many people comment "I couldn't drive that because....." You may find the rental car to have rh steering....and then again it may not. But one thing is for sure, they DO drive on the left. So

KEEP LEFT and you'll be RIGHT.

So the driver needs to pay close attention. An unfamiliar driver will usually screw up when making their first left hand turn or when in a traffic circle and I think down town still has one or two. Not a good time for ... well, I've only had two, nor even good conversation. The driver needs to pay a wee bit more attention than normal despite less traffic.

- watch for pedestrians stepping off on the LEFT side, who btw are also checking traffic from the WRONG direction if they came from a cruise ship....

- watch for other crazy tourists on mopeds and scooters who are ALSO on the wrong side of the road.

- a Jeep sounds fun but note there is no place on GC where it is legal to go off road that I know of, and an open Jeep vs an air conditioned sedan in the summer might warrant reconsideration. Your call there.

You can do it but beeee careful. At least you don't plan to rent Moped/scooters..... that's a REAL good way to get to experience island emergency medicine :(
