Cour10ay Posted November 26, 2004 #1 Share Posted November 26, 2004 Since we are sailing with a mixed group of smokers and non-smokers, can anyone tell me the policy on RCI? (We are looking at several of the Voyager class or the Radiance otS) I assume Dining rooms are NO. Staterooms and private balconies YES. Theater NO. But what about bars? Are there designated areas such as port or starboard side or seats at the bar or 2 tables for 2 that allow smokers? And other public rooms, what about those? (ie: lounges, discos, etc...) And outside on the deck - is it smoking on one side and non on the other? The last time we cruised with RCI in Fall 2002 the only non-smoking areas were dining room, theater, and one side (can't remember if it was port or starboard) both inside and outside the ship. Not wanting to start a smokers vs non-smokers debate. Just want to try to satisfy everyone in my group if possible as far as smoking is concerned. Thanks! Cant wait again for the non-smokers to start another debate on smoking, its sure to come . To answer your question, there are many smoking areas in the bar/lounge areas, in the casino, most all areas outside on the decks, cant remember if only one-side is designated non smoking. Hallways, standing in dinner lines etc. might be allowed but not to polite imo.
tmt9367 Posted November 26, 2004 #3 Share Posted November 26, 2004 Port side of the ship is smoking and the starboard side is non-smoking. This applies when you're in a lounge or outside by the pool. S
Cour10ay Posted November 27, 2004 Author #4 Share Posted November 27, 2004 Thanks for the help! I really didn't want to start an Us vs Them thread and hope this doesn't lead to that. We just needed info to make an informed decision. The smokers in our group are what I would call "considerate smokers" and will gladly extinguish their cigarette if someone asks, do not smoke in non-smoking areas, and are fun people! We have narrowed our choices down, and smoking was the last issue to tackle for us. We'd hate to cruise and have half the group standing outside after dinner instead of enjoying the bars or dancing venues. Seems like now it's between the Navigator, the Explorer or the Rhapsody for Halloween 2005. Cour10ay

tanker47 Posted November 27, 2004 #7 Share Posted November 27, 2004 Just got back from the Mariner. Smoking was allowed on all open decks (starboard side). Also smoking areas in all lounges and the casino that I visited. Also in your cabin and balcony. Happy cruising Tanker
cmason Posted November 27, 2004 #8 Share Posted November 27, 2004 Navigator was the same as posted above for Mariner. The Two Poets pub had some smokers, but the others were not noticable, perhaps because they were open or larger, not sure, but the pub was the only place I noticed any smoking. Cour10ay Posted November 27, 2004 Author #9 Share Posted November 27, 2004 Thanks for the info. I'm sure everyone in our group will be satisfied with both smoking and non-smoking areas! Thanks again for making the final decision real easy. Navigator otS Oct 29, 2005 here we come! Cour10ay
MGoBlue2 Posted November 27, 2004 #10 Share Posted November 27, 2004 The four ships I have been on have all had the port side non-smoking and the starboard side smoking.Apparently, it varies from ship to ship. tmt9367 Posted November 27, 2004 #11 Share Posted November 27, 2004 The four ships I have been on have all had the port side non-smoking and the starboard side smoking. You've got it backwards. Standing at the back of the ship looking forward, the port side is to your left and starboard is to your right. Main Entry: 1star·board Pronunciation: 'stär-b&rd Function: noun Etymology: Middle English sterbord, from Old English stEorbord, from stEor- steering oar + bord ship's side -- more at STEER, BOARD : the right side of a ship or aircraft looking forward -- compare PORT S 30+ cruises and counting

davidaperryman Posted November 27, 2004 #13 Share Posted November 27, 2004 tmt, Have you ever sailed on the Rhapsody, Celebration, Elation or Splendor? Smoking is on the starboard (right) side as I remember.
tmt9367 Posted November 28, 2004 #14 Share Posted November 28, 2004 Why wouldn't RCCL have a standard smoking policy in regards to where you can and cannot smoke? We're Diamond Crown & Anchor members and Elite Captain's Club members and have never seen smoking allowed on the starboard side of any ship. I don't smoke, but my DW does occasionally. To answer your question, no, we have never been on the Rhapsody, Celebration, Elation or Splendor. S
bUU Posted November 28, 2004 #15 Share Posted November 28, 2004 Each ship is presumably, to some extent, allowed to manage itself. This is very common in business, as it provides managers actually interacting with the customers to feel greater enablement to satisfy them. stillfrantic Posted November 28, 2004 #16 Share Posted November 28, 2004 Is smoking allowed on all balconies and rooms? Do they smell smokey? With an asthmatic child, I sure hope we have not had smokers in the room we'll be in. The no smoking on the port/smoking on the starboard rule....is that just open pool decks or is it room balconies also?
bUU Posted November 28, 2004 #17 Share Posted November 28, 2004 The way it seemed to me, the public areas of the ship were non-smoking, but specific places in the ship (including the outside promenade deck on one side of the ship) were designated as places where smoking was permitted. The non-smoking policy, however, didn't extent to cabins or balconies.
1corona4u Posted November 28, 2004 #18 Share Posted November 28, 2004 Take a negative ion generator with you. Here is a great one. I have 5 of these, and an Ionic Breeze in my house. These out perform the IB greatly. They are 16 pin. You can also use it in the car. They will make a 16x18 room smell like clean laundry that has been hanging on the line all day!! No smells linger with these!! Just do the buy now. I think I paid $59.00 for the first 3 I bought, then the price went down, LOL. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=14932&item=5734859090&rd=
Rick R Posted November 28, 2004 #19 Share Posted November 28, 2004 I know these are great items but. People should read up before getting one. The side effects are not good. Check what the EPA has to say about them. You may decide that it is not worth it. Nagative and positive ion generators produce ozone. The no smoking on the port/smoking on the starboard rule....is that just open pool decks or is it room balconies also? Smoking is allowed in ALL cabins, no matter what side of the ship they're on. I've always wondered why if the port side is smoking, why the cruise lines don't make port side cabins smoking and starboard cabins non-smoking. Maybe because there would be a demand for more of one type of cabin than the other? S
1corona4u Posted November 28, 2004 #21 Share Posted November 28, 2004 These are produced at safe levels on this machine. Also, ozone generators are different that negative ion generators. The gen's put out far more ozone than do the ion gen's.
tmt9367 Posted November 28, 2004 #22 Share Posted November 28, 2004 I read an article in Consumer Report that these negative ion generators do absolutely nothing. The government made Sharper Image retract their claims about these machine's effectiveness. S
Bette And Bill Posted November 28, 2004 #23 Share Posted November 28, 2004 We just returned from the Explorer of the Seas, while booking our next cruise, I asked about dedicated non-smoking staterooms and was told there were none. However, I was told that if your room is not satisfactory, you can asked to be changed to a different cabin. They will let you know what is available. To solve the problem for me, we booked a balcony for our next cruise, so I can air the room out while we are at sea.

After speaking with a person who has done the studies I will not to have one. Every one else should decide if it is right for them. Let's keep in mind the cabins are very small.
