Car rental in aruba

WHY do you need to rent a car for 8 hours????? What do you have planned??? We never rent cars on cruises. We get a cab as we don't have to watch the road or other crazy drivers, we can see the scenery, towns, people, houses, etc. We get the driver to give us a tour and take us where ever we want to go as he is telling us about his counrty and the sights. Once on a cruise our cab driver had TWO ACCIDENTS taking us to and from a beach! They we just fender benders, no police involved and he didn't care - the cab belonged to his mother-in-law and he was about to go to Africa! Last trip to Aruba we got in a small van for a tour with stops and learned a lot about Aruba from the driver. (How to move to Aruba- must hire a native for something, prove you can afford to live there and spend at least $300,000 for a house!) Just get a cab for 8 hours don't rent a car!

Aruba is a fabulous place to rent a car, especially a 4 wheel drive if you want to drive on the backside arid side of the island where it's similar to the lunar surface. There are several rental car places right at the port (several are local companies) and you can do some google searches and reserve, or just grab a car when you get to the port. As to the poster that never rents cars on cruises, we have rented cars on and off cruises on 4 continents and loved every minute. As to Aruba, we regularly stay on the island (usually for a week to 10 days) and nearly everyone who stays the island (mostly Americans) rents a car for their stay.

We did not rent a jeep but rented a car from Hertz on Aruba. Two sidenotes:

1). rental cars are likely to be older and in not as good condition as rentals in the US, even when renting from a company like Hertz. The car we got would have probably been rejected from the fleet of "Joe Blow Car rental" in any major US city. It was rather beat up.

2). we had difficulty finding the car rental place "at the pier". We were looking for an official looking booth. What we found looked like a child's lemonade stand. Below is a picture of the walkway from the ship to town in Oranjestad... almost within the shrubbery on the right are the white wooden booths (maybe 4 of them, not seen in the picture) housing the car rental facilities. They are not buildings, they aren't even really shacks - no doors, no windows, no electricity. Think Lucy's psychiatry stand in the Charlie Brown comics. We had no problem with them other than finding them when we were looking for something more official looking. Look between the bushes to find them.

I agree with Kikkycat, we had a hard time finding the rental booth for Royal Rentals. I walked right by the Royal "lemonade stand" booth; I was looking for an individual house-like structure. After roaming around for about 20 minutes I found Royal's booth. We waited 1 hour for someone to show up and no one ever did. The street tour people (who are everywhere) said that they had NOT seen anyone around the booth.

I had a confirmed email in hand for our rental and no one EVER showed up, even at 5 pm, which was the return time for the rental.

We ended up taking one of the tours from the vans who are at the port and had a very good experience. He gave us a 1.5 hour tour of the island for #15.00.

We rented from Amigo Car Rental. Their office is next to the Airport. They picked us up outside the pier (after a phone call to remind them when they were not there on time). They took us to their office to do the paperwork and we were on our way in 15 minutes. We rented a Chevy Tracker? 4WD that was really beat-up but it took us to the windward side of the island and through some really rough terrain.

Amigo had the best prices, but in hindsight, I should have spent another $15 and rented one of the nice new Jeep Wranglers they had.
