Embassey Suite

Will be spending one night before cruise at the Embassey. Want to go out and walk around to experience some of NO. Any suggestions? We will be on foot. Should we go to the Riverwalk? Bourbon Street? Any help and suggestions would be appreciated. What's the weather like in the evening in early January?

you are pretty close to all, we stayed at the Embassy Suites and loved it. The breakfast was great, try the crawfish omlet if you dare, my sweetie said it was great. St Louis Square is pretty, and the flea market is fun too, take the trolley there, it was reasonable and fun - we bought an all day pass for about 5.00 per person that was well worth the expense.

Here is a little walking tour which will let you see lots of sights and keep you out of potentially dangerous areas. As far as the weather goes, it is pretty unpredictable here. The last two winters have been very mild, but you never know. Check it before you arrive.

Embassy Suites is on Julia Street. Go left on Julia (towards the river), cross Convention Center Boulevard and take the escalator up to the Riverwalk. Go left through the Riverwalk. The shops there are expensive and the offerings in the food court aren't very good, but that's up to you. You will exit at Spanish Plaza. The long building in front of you is the Canal Street ferry terminal. You can take a ride (free) across the river and back.

Keep going past the aquarium and walk along the riverfront to St. Peter Street. Go left on St. Peter to Decatur and take a right. Jackson Square will be on your left. You will come to Cafe DuMonde. Stop and have some coffee and donuts. Go down St. Ann (the street on the right side of Jackson Square) to Bourbon, and take a left to Iberville. That's about as much of Bourbon Street as I can take, but that's a metter of taste. Stop and have a hurricane at Pat O'Brien's. Just one.

Continue down Bourbon to Iberville. Take a left in Iberville and another left on Royal Street. I think Royal is the nicest street in the quarter. Continue down Royal to St. Ann. Take a right on St. Ann to Decatur. Go along to Decatur to Canal. Take a left on Canal. You will see Harrah's casino on the right. Walk through the casino/ Even if you aren't gamblers, it is an interesting place to see. At the end of the casino furtherst from Canal Street there is a tunnel under Poydras Street. You will come out on Convention Center Boulevard, about three blocks from the hotel.

There are lots of things to see along this route, and you can take whatever detours you want. There are some good maps of the area at:

Just got back from our cruise. We stayed at the Embassy Suites. It was really nice for our family of five, including 2 teenagers. Walked to French Quarter as well as cruise ship. Breakfast was very good. Price was only $99 for family of five, less for fewer people. I recommend!

Thanx for posting. I looked up my date, but it would be $144 for the night ($136 for the pay in advance/no cancellation rate). So, I'll probably stay with the Hampton Inn Convention Center ($98 rate).
