Does anyone know how far the port is from the actual town. We will be on the Azamara Quest in May. It seems like a doable town on your own, just curious as to whether there will be taxis at the dock and what the distance is.

The distance, as the crow flies, is really not that great. It is the elevation change that is a killer. Not certain where your tender stops, but there will most probably be taxis, perhaps a local bus, and the gondola ride to the top. I'd probably opt for the later. It is a DIY port.

If you dock at Taormina itself instead of Messina your ship will anchor and tender you in. From there they should have some sort of shuttle to a parking structure at the foot of town from which you take an elevator up. Once you exit the elevator you can walk all through town on your own.
