Kids in Newport RI

Hi, thanks everyone for all the Newport info. I think I am going to do the Cliff walk and Breakers (one day stop on Carnival Miracle in April). Just wondering, are there any more kid friendly things to do in Newport? I may be sick of my kids by then and just leave them on the ship, but just in case I still love them, will they be bored or are there parks, etc around?

(5,8,10yrs old)

Also I will have some sr citizens with me too, is the cliff walk too physically demanding? One of them has walking issues, maybe I will leave her behind too!! :p

thanks!

I think most kids would be board to tears touring the Breakers. While I enjoyed it, my kids would not have. We were choosing a cruise for this year with the kids and didn't think they would get too much out of Newport

We really enjoyed our day walking the Cliff walk and touring the breakers 9/08. You can take the bus/trolley directly to the breakers. We walked from the beginning and the draw back there was that we had some walking to do from the bus stop to the start of the cliff walk.

If too much walking is a problem, you could take the bus to the Breakers, do the tour, and then stroll for as long or as little from that point. Or the mobility people could just head back without the Cliff Walk. It is a wide well maintained walking path that I would not consider demanding at all, especially since you just do as much as you want.

Also, I do recall the Breaker's guide asking if there was anyone who had issues with stairs as they will allow you to use an elevator if mobility is hard.

  • 3 weeks later...

Kids in newport--- there is an amusement arcade there right on America's Cup ave but my suggestion is to go to the cliff walk area to 1st beach: the cliff walk overlooks part of it and there is a carosuel/hands on aquarium there... really nice. swings too. I am a local and have spent alot of time there when my kids were little. It is walkable but a long walk- esp depending on how old the kids are... and involves a hill.

Feel free to ask any questions--- this is one thing I do know on these boards!

Here are some suggestions in random order:

Go sailing on Narragansett Bay on Madeleine, a 72 ft schooner

Take a tour of local waters on a classic speedboat:

Take a tour of the restored Rose Island Lighthouse:

Do your children play tennis? Then you wouldn’t want to miss a tour of the International Tennis Hall of Fame. You could rent a grass tennis court there and play.

Visit Fort Adams State Park. Construction started on the fort in 1824.

Take a harbor tour:

Do they enjoy woodworking, then how about a visit to the International Yacht Restoration School and watch the students work on old wooden boats.

Some of the above are seasonal.
