Hi All: We are going on the CB on 4/26 to the Southern Caribbean. We have already been to St, Thomas and Barbados, but never to Tortola, Antigua or St. Lucia. We are beach lovers!!! Please give us some guidance about the best beaches to visit. We usually catch a cab to wherever the beaches are. Also this will be our first Princess cruise. We can't wait!! Thanks,

Rich

We love Dickenson Bay in Antigua, lovely beach and not far from the port. Taxis are cheap and reliable. Tortola we have been to Cane Garden which is another lovely beach and also easily reached by local transport. We will be visiting both again in April.

If Aruba is on your schedule, you can take the public bus to Palm Beach. It is a beautiful beach, surrounded by high end hotels with casinos. We could sit out there for ever. There is always a breeze in Aruba. We took the bus and it was $4.60 total round trip for 2 of us. Don't take the cab if you are physically able to take the bus. The ride is no more than 20 minutes.

Would you recommend catching a cab to Dickenson Bay rather than the ship's beach trip, which takes you to Runaway Bay? We will be in Antigua for the first time in May. We'd like a beautiful beach that has an area to rent chairs/umbrellas, food/beverages and clean restrooms!

Antigua Resorts is very nice. It is fairly secluded; and, there are chairs for rent. We will be on Palm beach on April 2, 2009, weather permitting. Also, we hope to visit Morne Rouge Beach in Grenada on April 4.

One caveatt vis-a-vis Antigua Resort bar-your change will be in local currency; hence, unless you intend to spend it all in Antigua be cautious.

Awesome info about the beaches. For the folks that asked about Aruba, unfortunately this cruise does not go there. We actually go to Aruba every September, so if anyone needs some info about beaches and snorkeling, lemme know.

Loved Long Bay which is next to the Pineapple Beach Resort in Antigua. Little bit of a ride to get there though. Also, if you want seclusion, and at one time one of the best beaches in Antigua, you should check out Half Moon Bay.. We did both last week. No ammenities at Half Moon Bay but it is beautiful and has a lagoon portion to the far left where the water is the warmest and you'll have fish swimming at your ankles in the shallow water.

We're huge beach lovers as well!

Tortola- Cane Garden Bay OR The Baths. (if you go to the Baths you'll spend a bit of time getting there & back). Recommend though for a first time visit foresure!

Antigua- Darkwood Beach. See 1st two pics attached. A little wave action the day we were there but so great & lots of fun! Not very long but enough for a good 10 minute walk, narrow as are most beaches on the island. Also has a restaurant/ bar/restrooms on site. Beach chairs and umbrellas to rent as well. If i remember correctly it was 5 usd per chair and 3USD for an umbrella.

Been to Dickenson--too busy for my liking but good for nice walk. I honestly don't think you can go wrong with any beach in Antigua.

St. Lucia- Reduit Beach - see attached. Had an awesome time here a few weeks ago. Water so so warm and sand so soft. fyi..they charge 1 USD to use the restrooms at the restaurant. If you eat there..its free of charge to use. Oh and they make the BEST Pina Colada's too!!:D The vendors aren't so bad either. They're pretty cool and very friendly.

Enjoy!!!!

We always do it on our own rather than through the ship. The ship tours are a rip-off.

Antigua - Dickenson's Bay

St. Lucia - Reduit Beach

Tortola - Can Garden Bay

I agree. But I have to admit I am a bit of a chicken going off on our own in places we haven't visited before!!!:o

Dickenson's Bay sounds terrific. I understand it is a very busy beach, but thats okay with us. I assume taxis are plentiful to take us there and then back again? And is there any specific place along the beach that you recommend we head towards????

Thanks!:)

I recommend being closest to the bar. Do what makes you feel comfortable, but after the first port you may begin to realize that there is no need to stress and you will be fine taking cabs on your own. Plenty do justthat. Happy cruis'n!

I'm sure you're right. I find as I get older (God, did I just admit that???) I get more hesitant!!

One more question - can we purchase items at the bar at Dickensons using US funds? I read the previous post giving the heads up that change will be in local currency, so if US is accepted here, we'll just be sure to bring lots of $1 bills, so as not to need change.

Agree with Darkwood beach in Antigua. A nice way to get there is by public transit. The bus terminal is by the veg & craft market which is a short walk from the pier. I believe it is bus #22 but you can ask the visitors info booth on the pier or at the bus station. $1.50 pp one way and a 20 minute bus ride and a great way to meet the people and see a bit of the country. Bus stops right at the beach.
