I don't like sand and sun!

But please tell me I'm not making a mistake by taking a cruise to the Eastern Caribbean! I've been on only one other cruise 20 years ago with children, and now we're celebrating our 30th anniversary on the Radiance starting Jan.2...

I don't even want to go to Cabo Cay since I think it will be all beach stuff - right? I'm not even planning to take a swimsuit on the cruise. Is this heresy?

I'm really filled with anticipation and exitement over our cruise, but do others go who want only to shop at the ports and not enjoy the beaches? They sound so wonderful, but I'm 50-ish, fair, and fluffy, and they're not much fun for me.

Other than the above statements...I'm really a very positive person who finds much joy in living, and I know I'll have a great time!

I just wondered if others go on cruises hating the sun and the sand, too!

I am the complete opposite of you. I love the sand and sun. A cruise to Alaska would not be my first choice. That said, I still would love to go to Alaska. I'm told it is beautiful, and not to be missed. There still are all the other activities on board, casinos, bingo, sitting in a little spot reading a good book---people watching (always fun) someone to tidy up your room, cook your meals......I'm sure you get my drift. Go---have fun! And stop worrying! You will have no choice but to enjoy the beautiful scenery, and on most islands, there is good shopping to be found! I'd love to hear how it goes for you when you get back!

   !

Why not take an Alaskan voyage

Well.As long as you are not too oppossed to the Ocean,or all things Marine-like.You might be OK...

Maybe you are saying...You don't like the beach.I can get that, and there are alot of people, many in my own family that don't,that still enjoy the cruise. But they are all big fans of boating and sailing in general. There is plenty of "resort" like activites onboard, and plenty of fun shopping and sightseeing and touring to do....I just can't get past that whole...Don't like the sun thing...Cause theres no real getting away from the Sun...If you don't like it..

If you are just saying you don't want to baste yourself, thats another story,Go for it...You will have a blast.:)

Just have fun on the ship .

My wife and I are very fair skin and do not enjoy beach and sun . I like Alaska cruises the most.

I suggest making the ship your destination ...relax and enjoy ;)

Eastern Caribbean, lets see now, a bunch of island countrys in the middle of an ocean, located in a warm climate. There will be a lot of sun, and the islands will be en-circled by beaches. But we have gone for the history and sight seeing at the stops, and the art auctions and bingo on the ship. Then there is always a shaded deck chair to relax in and read a good book , catch a nap, or just listen to the water. And the food ! Now I want to go again.

My Wife an I are 50 and think the beaches in the Eastern are some of the best out there. Take a suit just in case, if not they sell them on ship.:D

Ha, no, I wouldn't kid about something like this! (And this judy is from Arkansas). I really don't like the sun, and the sun doesn't like me! I burn super easily, and sand just really bothers me. However, I LOVE to sit and look at it all, but I don't like to get hot and sweaty.

Alaska would have been my first choice, but some friends of ours booked this cruise first and then asked us to go with them since we're all celebrating our 30th anniversaries.

Takes all kinds, I suppose. In my next life, I'm coming back as a super swimsuit model...ha!

Na Folgy,I totally get it..I understand not wanting to baste yourself. All I am saying is there is a difference,in not wanting to fry,and not likeing the sun.

I have a friend...who just hates the sun,the hot,the heat etc...no way would she consider a cruise (caribbean)..Even in port,it can get pretty hot walking around town.

She lives in NJ...Took us to a racetrack (horse) in June.It was in the low 80's,about 50% humidity..I THOUGHT SHE WAS GONNA DIE:D

So Folgy...Who is this Kamloops Cruiser...Is this your DW?? IF not,do ya know em...There can't be that many cruisers from Kamloops...

Ok,I have no clue how many people are in Kamloops...I just really love the way it sounds...Kamloops...I wanna live there:p

My wife and I are both very fair-skinned, burn easily, and are very concerned about pre-cancerous blemishes, etc. We still, though, are able to enjoy the Caribbean and even destination vacations such as St. Barts, Punta Cana, etc. We get a lounge chair in the shade and soak up the atmosphere, the smell of the ocean, the sound of the waves and listen to nearby music and read and enjoy the beach tremendously without getting a bit of sun. On our cruises we love to be near the pool and listening to the music and people-watching, but we do so in the cool comfort of the shade.

Don't worry, Judy...there about a zillion things to do on a cruise that don't involve sand OR sun.....for instance:

casino gambling, auctions and art shows, shopping, spa treatments, resting in the solarium on a chaise in the shade, bingo, dancing, drinking, EATING, touring historical sites, strolling the promenade decks--you all know that I could go on and on....and still not name everything!

Bring a small pocket umbrella when out on your port visits to protect you from the sun--I do this all the time when cruising, while in Mexico, or Disney World, or wherever--in fact you will see many of the island locals doing the same thing.

Bring a swim suit just in case; relaxing in a hot tub at night can be most relaxing....

I don't mind sand and sun, but I am not a sunworshipper by any means....have a great cruise!

I like the sun but I get very restless and bored just laying out in the sun (and hot and sweaty). I'm from Maine! haha. Anyway, I'm not sure where your stops are but we went to St Thomas that has a great tram type car that rides to the top of a mountain. It was only $10 and what a view! We could look down on all the ships in port. Another stop we had was St. Croix where we took an island tour. That was awesome too. It was narrated and we stopped at a couple of different places. I suggest island tours if you want to see the island without having to be out in the sun.

I suggest going to the message boards and pulling up the islands you will be stopping at and see what people are recommending. That's how we found our tours.

Have fun!

Judy...there's more to cruising than beaches and suntans. We have cruising friends from Calif. and the wife will not go in the pool or the ocean. However they love to cruise and take many tours of the islands and they shop of course.

I've always felt that the ship is the main course and the ports are just so many deserts to enjoy. You could take a swimsuit, perhaps, for a midnight dip in the hot tub with DH and a bottle of bubbly (no sand or sun there). Just a thought!!

Happy Anniversary Cruising

Aw..come on Judy..Your pulling our leg,right.

I just noticed your screen name...Judyinar....could that mean Arizona?

And you don't like the sun :D

LOL...LOL.....I hate the heat...and look where I live! The last 2 years have been torture for me, a medical condition has caused me to not tollerate heat or cold....and right now we are under a freeze warning! I can't win.

I too am not much of a sun/sand/beach person, but love cruising, staying on the ship is the best, always something to see or do, having an empty ship to explore and take pictures.

Go and have fun...I agree about taking at least on suit, you never know if you want to walk along the water at Coco Cay....so refreshing.:)

The Radiance is beautiful and you won't be disappointed.

Judy,

I hate to break this to ya but there are no air conditioned malls down there.

Walkin around just lookin at the sights will get you very hot an sweaty.

And, NO, we are not models either :D .

Actually there is A/C in the Marigot Mall in St.Maarten.

Judy,

I don't really like sun myself. I was severely burnt on my land vacation in Punta Cana...Couldn't sleep and live for a week...But I am sure there are covered places near the pools on the ship..so you can enjoy swimming and don't have to burn yourself. Keep in mind also that when you are in the 'sea it's not as hot as laying on the beach. One necessary thing though is sunblock! Take 30 or 45 and apply often even if you aren't sunbathing!

Also while on Caribbean cruises we never went to the beach (except on private island of HAL). We go to the island sightseeing tours (A/C buses), to the interesting places like Coral World in St.Thomas or Turtle farms in Grand Caymans etc.

Have a great trip.:)

The Kamloopscruiser is some person I have never met. They are very nice posters and cruise enthusiast. I love Kamloops and all 4 of our seasons.

I live in a climate zone that appeals to me. :D

Although my DH & I aren't big sun/swimming people we are going to at least take our suits on our next cruise to the W.Caribbean. I have to agree with ArizonaCruiser - we love staying on the ship while in the ports - there is always something to do. We just love cruising - and we've never gotten in the pool, spa, or the ocean on any cruise so far. Do what you love to do while you're on the ship - read, relax, play cards, eat, drink, socialize..... you won't be sorry you booked this for your anniversary. Go, and have alot of fun.

There are so many options besides the beach! You could take tours or go shopping or just walk around. I personally LOVE the beach, but I live by one. I can go to the beach any old time I want to. I like to do OTHER things on a cruise that I CAN'T do at home. Take a tour. Take a horse and buggy ride. Go horseback riding. Go shopping. Enjoy some authintic food not on the ship. Meet the natives. You'll have a wonderful experiance. Don't miss all the culture off the ship by staying on it!!:)

Thanks so much for all the imput. I'm positive I will enjoy everything else about the cruise! I love to sightsee and I'm known as the "travel guide" to my friends; I also enjoy gambling quite a bit (weird stretch for this newly-retired teacher). I also read quite a bit, adn if the balcony is somewhat shaded(?), that sounds absolutely lovely.

It's good to know that I won't be the only one on the cruise not looking to worship the sun but feeling like an albino alien for not wanting to.

Thanks, Judy

Judy, Judy, Judy,

It's your cruise and there are so many things to do. You can avoid the sun and the sand but going to the caribbean will be a challenge for you. Tours are conducted in AC buses soooo slather on the #45 sun screen (there is usually some walking in the sun involved) and go enjoy. ORRRR slather on the #45 and shop til you drop. Or stay on board and curl up with a good book in the shade (after you slathered on the #45) Orrr sleep all day and party all night (no #45 needed). All kidding aside, There really are many, many things to do on a cruise that do not involve sand or sun.

As a cancer survivor, melanoma is a constant worry for me but I refuse to let it interfer with a vacation. I love to cruise and find so many things to do....you will too if you just try.

Now if your problem is the heat.....well Alaska or the Baltics would have been a better choice. Hot flashes are wonderful there.

You said you have a positive attitude....well girl....go and have a good time. mems

Judy - the absolute best place to read is in the Viking Crown Lounge. You can sit in air conditioned comfort overlooking the pool or on the sides or aft watching the world go by. We've been on 20 cruises and I have yet to go into the pool or sit on a beach. We find plenty of things to do that do not involve sun & sand.

I would agree with the rest that a Caribbean cruise = SUN!

I would also Agree with the fact that you will have the best overlook at everything (SHip and Shore) In the viking crown

ALSO keep in mind, that since a lot of schools are still out, or it's a 1/2 week, you will have a lot of childeren on the cruise
