Charlotte Amalie to St. John's Ferry?

Leaving Saturday on a cruise so have waited until the last minute to look up this info. If we decide to try St. John's on our own doesn't it make sense to ferry from Charlotte Amalie to St. John's rather than finding a way to red Hook - which will require a cab. The difference in ferry price is $5 a person. I have read posts on people catching a bus etc. to Red Hook but to me why add in that uncertainty if you can just ferry from Charlotte Amalie? We arrive in the Crown Bay port so I am guessing Charlotte Amalie is a fairly inexpensive cab ride.

Would you recommend we even try this - are the ferries reliable? On time? We have stopped in St. Thomas several times and thought it might be nice to see St. John's. What is at the Cruz Bay pier when we arrive? We are trying to keep shore trips to a minimum $ on this cruise. Not interested in visiting beaches on either St. Thomas or St. John's as our cruise itinerary has several other beaching stops and we were hoping to do a little more on this stop.

Thanks.

When you dock at the cruise terminal in Charlotte Amalie, there will be cabs lined up. Jump on one and go to the Red Hook terminal--about a half an hour. The ferries are very reliable and the ride is beautiful over to St. John, about 20 minutes. If you sit on top, you can take fabulous photos! Then the taxis are once again lined up waiting for ferry passengers. You can easily tour St. John, which is a gorgeous, scenic island you will love, have lunch at Trunk Bay, then get back to the ferry in time to make the return trip. The ferries run on the hour from St. Thomas. I'm sure there are probably ferry schedules elsewhere on this site and certainly on the Internet. St. John is not to be missed!

Hope this helps.

Enjoy your cruise!

The downtown ferry runs infrequently and is not always the best choice for cruise passengers. The Red Hook ferry runs every hour and is generally a safer bet timewise. Goggle St Thomas ferry and see what the schedule is, understanding that it might not be current! Enjoy:)

We took the 11:00 am ferry over to St John;s from Charlotte Amalie after taking a 10 minute cab ride from Crown Bay - we came back on the 3:30 pm ferry back to Charlotte Amalie - with many fellow Caribbean Princess passengers which ran a little late but still we got back to the ship more than 45 minutes before our 5:30pm Sailaway time. The ferry ride over was beautiful and took about 35-40 minutes. We preferred the longer ferry ride and shorter taxi ride but to each his own.

One thing - when we got off the ship in Crown Bay - several taxi drivers suggested we could not take the Charlotte Amalie ferry as we missed the 9 am ferry and the next one was not until 11:00. They kept saying we were being risky....they wanted us to stay in St. Thomas - we just ignored them and got them to take us to Charlotte Amalie - and we were glad we did - it was a great day!
