NEED ADVISE on land based vacations

You didn't mention what time of year you planned to go, but if within the next month or so, that is a beautiful time of year to hit the Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway in the Smokies.

That would depend in large measure how comfortable Ruth is riding in a car, but great scenery.

Another out of the way place but well worth the trip, but again would include a fair bit of driving after you flew in, is Nova Scotia. If you can find pics of the Cabot Trail online somewhere it is just stunning. Peggys Cove is nice, if a bit touristy and Halifax would surely have first rate hotels. We honeymooned in NS 35 yrs ago and plan to go back (and include a trip up around the Gaspe peninsula in Quebec), once we've retired.

And down near Yarmouth, if it is still there, is a small restaurant called Harris' Quick and Tasty that had chowder that we've measured all others since, against.

Jim, if you and Ruth want to come to Vegas the Casinos are still smoker friendly and there is plenty of places with good food. The down side is it is so spread out. The casinos are quite large with lots of walking. To see the different resorts you would have to grab a taxi at each place because the walking would not work for Ruth. If you want to just relax I would just choose anyone of Las Vegas resorts and stay there and not venture out too much :D

Jim check out the following sites. We sure have gotten great deals with.

Vacation Rentals by Owners and SkyAuction. By the way we were in Corpus Christi in the fall and we toured the Lexington. What a great ship. Well worth touring. We will be doing the Mighty Mo this fall as well as the Arizona Memorial and the Bowfin. Enjoy those sites. :)

When we got married and drove from Pennsylvania to Florida in December we drove down the Skyline drive and it was fantastic with the streams running on one side, the snow covered mountains on the other side and a light snowfall for the entire drive.

We may do that one as a trip down memory lane.

We could drive up it in the fall and then spend a couple days in Gettesburgh and then come back down the coast highway and maybe stop in Charleston for a couple days....

We really appreciate all the advise and sites that everyone has told us about. Enough reserch to keep us busy for a long time...

Going to take some of the tour books with us on the Veendam and set up some stuff there

Charleston is hard to beat. If you're there, drop down to Savannah, one of America's great small cities. We go back again and again, and never tire of it.

Both are beautiful cities, reasonable prices, easy to navigate, with great food, lovely neighborhoods, and lots to see and do.

If you choose Washington DC try taking the Tourmobile. It is a hop on/hop off tour. So you can get off and walk when you want to and just ride around and see a lot and have a great narration.

Tulum will be rought. We were there in January and I had recently had knee replacement surgery. The walking on rough surfaces got to me pretty quick.
