Hello everyone this is my first post. I'm going on my second cruise next month and I have a question about playing some poker. I've been looking online at some pictures and I noticed I didn't see much action at the poker table. I was wondering does carnival have set times to play poker? Thanks

Depending on which flavor of poker you are referring to, there may or may not be much action, if any. For the most part, though, the poker tables are open when the rest of the casino is open.

Last couple of cruises, the poker table is/are electronic.

You don't have live dealers and live cards.

You go to the cashiers cage and purchase a card with cash value.

You then sit down at the table, insert the card, and a representation of your chip value appears.

Your cards are dealy to you electronically, then of course bet, then the flop appears electronically for all to see. etc, etc.

The thing I don't like about it is that it appears that this is designed for more play. What I mean is that I stood around watching one time for a half hour. In that half hour I watched 2 people both chasing 4 of a kind. Both got 4 of a kind.

An occasional bad beat is one thing. Continous bad beats are another.

I was hoping to play some hold em, I wasn't sure if they had a tournament or a time slot. Hopefully there will be someone playing!!!!

Neither, really. If there are people playing, you can hop on and off as much as you like, although the other players may not appreciate it. ;)

The table is as random as is possible for an electronic device (true randomness is impossible to accomplish with a computer). There is no skewing of the cards to increase play time. Doing so would actually lose money for the casino anyway, since there would be fewer rakes.

Welcome to Cruise Critic!

We're thrilled to have you on board!!

Whenever the casino is open the poker tables are available. Generally, the tables are quite busy in the evenings.

If you're interested in Texas Hold 'em be warned that the only Hold 'em normally available is an electronic Poker Pro table.

Some folks really like them. I don't like them in the least...

I just got back from the Conquest and I rarely ever saw anyone sitting at the poker table. I dont get why they have that electronic crap.. Just have a live dealer like all the other tables. I really looked forward to playing a bit and it just wasnt happening..

I hate the electronic tables. Here in the Philly area that is the only kind they have at the Casino in Philly.

Another question: Black Jack - real dealer or electronic?

(Probably a stupid question)

Robin

Not stupid, considering the hold em is electronic. The blackjack tables are real live dealers, lol. On the Miracle at least, there were no electronic blackjack machines of any kind.

Simple. No need to pay any salary to the table. Once it is paid for, it is probably close to 100% profit, if not for electricity and maintenance.

Maybe my thought process is off but I see this as a potential increase in rake revenue.

The more boats you have going against each other or trips against boats or 4 of a kinds going against each other increases the total size of the pot which increases the size of the rake.

Sure, makes sense. I guess ideally they would want both: more frequent AND larger rakes, lol.

Either way, it would not be legit to skew the randomizer in order to affect the outcome. It is understood that slots have "adjustable" odds, but I think most would presume that in hold 'em the cards will be random. IMO it is unethical and possibly illegal to affect the outcome where the presumption is that the cards will be random. I really hope I am not wrong on this - I'd really hate to think that they are artificially creating coordinated boards and hands.

DH is the poker man, me I like Roulette. He would stand around untill there were more people, because with the electronic rake, the less people, the percentage taken was greater. (I can't balance a checkbook, so I don't understand it.) On the Fantasy last summer, the tables didn't get busy until about 9:00 or so and would play until 1 or 2. He said the fishing was good, especially after someone had a few drinks in them!

I'm a cruise newbie too, but I am an avid poker player.

I am booked on the Triumph and set sail in 13 days. I was very much looking forward to the Poker Pro tables. I have played a lot of poker, both live and online, but have never tried the Poker Pro tables. (To be honest, it was 1/2 the reason I booked Carnival instead of another line)

I'm curious...how does the game played get determined? Is the table preset for only a certain limit or no-limit game? If the players all agree on changing the stakes, can it be changed?

I'm looking forward to NOT tipping a dealer! :)

I am not aware of a way to change the game, but my memory's a little foggy.

No tipping, but don't forget there is a pretty healthy rake.;)

Last time on the Legend there were 2 Poker Pro tables. Usually only one was filled. it was always either 1/2 or 2/4 limit. I never saw them change the limits during the course of a day. If 8 people wanted to have a tournament, the attendant would fire up the other table programmed for a tourney.

I don't think I'll be playing hold em on my next cruise. I play a lot online and live games. It seemed like on the ship there were a bunch of folks who never play that much live so they were going to make the most of it. Limits are relatively low so people would chase ANYTHING, and I mean ANYTHING. Watching people winning hands on the river that they had NO business even being in got tiring.

Oh, and I played one tourney.....I got down to final 2 and my quad 4's got beat by quad 8's.

Sound like fun?

If I understand, you are sailing on Royal Carib and this is the Carnival site, so I am not sure anyone here would be able to answer that.

And this is not the first i have heard of this with the poker pro tables.

I will be on the freedom on 5-9 and hope to get a real game going in the library or card room or game room. $30 buy in ? winner takes it all
