Glaciers, Alaska, South America, Antarctica,New Zealand Arctic Circle

For those of you who have done Alaska and any of the following: South America, Antarctica,or Arctic Circle, even New Zealand.......

 

What were your favorite "sail by" glacier or glaciers or glacier areas.

 

What were your favorite glacier visited on an excursion.

 

 

I was looking at the Celebrity Web site and trying to figure out what is visible from the ship on the SA "Round the Horn" cruises, and I couldn't quite get a handle on what glaciers or glacier areas can be seen from the ship.

 

I was also curious how the scenery in some of these more "exotic" destinations would compare to the beautiful scenery in Alaska.

We saw NO glaciers in N.Z. went into the Fjordland park,Milford Sound~ was summer...just 100's of waterfalls. No snow either. In Alaska we did the Hubbard Glacier, was a nastly rainy day...glacier was huge, we didn't get in as close as some ships. Expected to see more actual iceburgs, but though calving was continuos, only many fairly small pieces making water like slush were around. Now on the Kenai Fjord boat trip they took us up close...was 1 spot that would have given us a big berg...just ready to fall...but took too long, and we were also, according to Capt., too close and was endangering the boat. I think the Beagle Channel Glaciers are the most spectactuar. Romanche Glacier with the water falls down the face, and Italia Glacier with it's blue-white glassy ice. So close and so beautiful. Fantastic. Numerous small falls coming down the side if the Channel. Darwin Peak, almost like a ice carving jutting out of the ickpack. The most beautiful site I've seen up to now.

 

Loved the Falkland Islands, and Cape Hope with the Albatross Plaque you can see from a great distance.

 

I always tell people I cruise for the ship - the S American Cape Horn cruise was the cruise of ports for me, and Beagle Channel was the highlight.

Thanks Denny, ah, the Beagle Channel named after Darwin's HMS Beagle?:). Did the cruise ship take your into the Beagle Channel, or did your have to take an excursion for the visit.

When we cruised South America on the Mercury in 2001, we went to Pope Pio XI Glacier. It was spectacular and we got much closer to the face of this glacier compared to my three cruises that took us to Hubbard Glacier. We did not see any glaciers on the Australia and New Zealand cruise. I would love to do South America again!

I've been looking at a map of New Zealand's glaciers and they all seem to be located on the North Side of South Island or inland, or inland on the North Island.

 

Did anyone do an excursion to a glacier area? I seem to remember seeing some glaciers in Lord of the Rings, and I know there are tours that focus on taking tourists to the Lord of the Rings filming locations.

I agree with Denny.

I think the Beagle Channel is the best kept secret in cruising.

To me it has some of the most beautiful cruising there is. We spent the day cruising onboard the ship. We have been to Alaska three times and it almost makes you forget Alaska.

The Infinity sails January 3 next year from Buenos Aires to Valparaiso (Santiago)

If there is anyway possible to make this cruise I would say go for it. Not only do you have the mountains, glaciers and waterfalls. There are also penguins, sea lions, seals, llamas, rhea and more to be seen as well. If this doesn’t make it to the top of your favorite cruise list it will be awfully close.
