lbell Posted April 10, 2009 #1 Share Posted April 10, 2009 I am traveling with my Mother who can't walk long distances. Can anyone tell me if we can be on our own in Lucca without the one hour walking tour?
California Native Posted April 10, 2009 #2 Share Posted April 10, 2009 Buon Giorno! We went to Lucca as part of a land vacation, and yes it is very walkable. I would pick up the Rick Steves book at your library to view the walking tour. Also I would suggest that you make sure your moms shoes have a non skid sole, which help keeps you steady on wet cobblestones. lbell Posted April 11, 2009 Author #3 Share Posted April 11, 2009 Thank you! I was wondering if we could sit out part of the tour and meet up with the group later. If the walking isn't so difficult perhaps Mom can handle the tour.
brian_uk Posted April 11, 2009 #4 Share Posted April 11, 2009 We did the Ship tour last year of Lucca. Overall we would have preferred not to have walked with the Group, but explored on our own and had more time to look at the Shops. Without a doubt you can use their transportation and then be on your own until meeting a couple of hours later. The second part ofthe tour to a vineyard was great and we enjoyed the winetasting and snacks while there. Brian
California Native Posted April 11, 2009 #5 Share Posted April 11, 2009 Brian makes a good point.. we have used tours in the past for transportation and ditched it. It's important than you thoroughly discuss it with the guide on your bus for head count and security purposes We didnt find many benches to sit on in Lucca. there's always church steps and purchasing a beverage in a cafe and once you do that..you "own" that table for as long as you want! gillianrose Posted April 18, 2009 #7 Share Posted April 18, 2009 Is Lucca paved entirely with cobblestones? If not, perhaps you could rent a wheelchair so that she can roll along and see more of Lucca than just a café.
lbell Posted April 20, 2009 Author #8 Share Posted April 20, 2009 Where are wheelchair rentals available? Or are you suggesting that we rent a wheelchair to bring with us?
gillianrose Posted April 25, 2009 #9 Share Posted April 25, 2009 Where are wheelchair rentals available? Or are you suggesting that we rent a wheelchair to bring with us? I don't have the answer to your question, but I would imagine you could rent a wheelchair in Italy. Have you tried the "Disabled cruisers" forum on Cruise Critic? lbell Posted April 26, 2009 Author #10 Share Posted April 26, 2009 Gracias, I will check it out. Is anyone on the board taking the Lucca tour? Laura
arkcruiser Posted April 26, 2009 #11 Share Posted April 26, 2009 The tour bus cannot get into Lucca. The excursion that I took had us get off the bus and commence the walking tour, after which there was some free time, with a rendezvous time set for return to the bus. I don't think that it would be a problem to wander off on your own so long as you know where and when to meet the bus. Lucca, itself, is quite compact and is a pleasant alternative to more crowded sites.
arkcruiser Posted April 26, 2009 #12 Share Posted April 26, 2009 On wheel chairs, you might first check with the ship. My wife had an incident with her knees last year and the ship lent us a chair for however long we needed it. We took it on one excursion.
