lawahoo2001 Posted April 15, 2009 #1 Share Posted April 15, 2009 We'll be traveling to Alaska in July. I'm looking for a good monopod under $50 for my Nikon D60 (if that's possible - $100 is kind of my max budget) . I would like one that can easily fit in a backpack (12-18 inches folded) and that can support my D60 with a 300 mm lens fully extended. I'm wondering whether it's also possible for me to be able to easily/quickly remove my camera from the monopod to take vertical photos, if necessary. Any recommendations? The D60 and 75-300 is not a real hevyweight combo so the Slik monopod link below should serve you well. I also has a ballhead to allow for angle adjustment and letting the camera be moved to vertical without removing it from the monopod. bob16946 Posted April 15, 2009 #3 Share Posted April 15, 2009 I just purchased a Manfrotto 680B monopod for $60 for my upcoming Alaska cruise (link below). It folds to 20 inches. I'm also waiting for the Manfrotto 234RC Monopod Head Quick Release to be delivered next week. I've been very happy with Manfrotto tripod systems in the past. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009R6GE Bob

tandaart Posted May 1, 2009 #5 Share Posted May 1, 2009 Having been to Alaska I purchsed a Stoney Point Polecat combo collapsible hiking staff with theaded screw end for cameras and an V yolk for use with long lens. generally priced cheaper than camera monopods and of good quality build. I would recommend a good binocular harness it came in handier than the monopod
nmg222 Posted May 6, 2009 #6 Share Posted May 6, 2009 For a monopod is a ball head necessary or would a tilt head, with a 90 degree tilt, suffice? Also, if you use both a tripod and a monopod do you own two of these or just swap depending on usage? Thanks.

I prefer a ballhead so I can adjust for oddly sloping terrain and tilting the 'pod for comfort. The single knob on the Giottos MH1304 adjusts easily and locks up very solidly for such a compact unit. I put the same ballhead on my little 2 lb travel tripod so I can use it as a 60" tripod or strap the legs and make it into a monopod. Dave

Rare pierces Posted May 6, 2009 #9 Share Posted May 6, 2009 Thanks Dave. Do you know which quick release plate will fit on that head? I have a MH-652 from Giottos (have one on all my tri- and monopods) mounted on it. I had to use a reducing bushing to attach it, but it worked like a champ.
