Embarking bags and boarding later?

When you take a transfer from a airport to the ship, the porters usually tag your checked baggage and take it onto the ship. Normally, you would then go through the embarkation process.

But would it be possible to let your bags go onto the ship and you not embark until later? I'm thinking that you could have four (or so) hours free at the port without having to worry about your checked bags. Why? Well we are embarking at Barcelona and would be able to use some of the four hours at a (very) close tourist site.

Yes - I know all the dangers of getting back to the ship in time. But what about handling our bags that way? Is it doable?

Yes, absolutely. Be on the ship at least ONE HOUR before sailing.
