Question for Scubagirrl....

I have only been reading these boards since Wednesday when I found out my cruise was being redirected to Nassau (previously Cozumel), but I quickly see that you are the resident expert! I have two questions for you. I'll be traveling alone with my daughter (and have never cruised or been to the islands). Is Nassau safe to walk around in after dark, or are there any areas even in the tourist spots to avoid? Also, depending on how long we're there I'm thinking about doing Breezes, Wyndham or something similar. Do most of these walk-up/day pass resorts take cash or credit? The place we were supposed to go to Cozumel wanted cash only so that's why I'm asking. I don't want to carry around extra cash or a credit card if I'm not going to be using it that day. Thanks!

Nassau is NOT the place to walk around after dark. Senor Frogs in on the wharf and about the only place I would advise walking to and from. (there's police everywhere on the wharf). Like anywhere else, be aware of your surroundings. You don't want to be robbed because your drunk or not paying attention.

If you want to just wander around in the evening.. Take a cab to Atlantis.. walk around Marina Village.. check out the band in the courtyard.. then head to the casino and the hotel lobby. The aquarium is open to all after 7pm.. It's a nice safe way to hang out after dark.

Take a cab back to the ship..

We were curious about this too. We heard it was even unsafe to be in a cab after dark. I'm assuming this is an exageration?

We want to walk around Atlantis late afternoon/early evening after we do the Dolphin Swim at Blue Lagoon. I never even thought about getting a taxi after dark. What do you recommend? We're in port until 11:59 pm, so we have lots of time available.

When getting into a cab always do so at a pick up point where they are queued up.. not trolling the streets for fares... THey should have a license plate with NP on it. Outside the Port and in the Hotel entries, you are assured union cabs.. which are perfectly safe.

You won't have trouble finding a properly licensed cabs if you look for these pick up areas.

If you are at a venue and need a cab.. ask the proprietor to get you a cab.. he'll call a union cab.. or flag one down outside.

Scubagirl - what about during the day doing a self-guided walking tour? Are there any particular dangers? Some of the photos I've seen of some of the historic area look pretty remote in places.

we did the walking tour from Frommer's last week - when you get off the main drag (once you get to the bottom of the hill after the PO) WATCH THE TRAFFIC - there are a few parts on the walking tour where you have no choice but to walk in the street - and remember they drive on the other side of the road.....

PS ScubaGirl thanks for all the info you are awesome!

During the daytime there are lots of people milling around and it's quite safe. Of course, your'e in a foreign city.. take normal precautions.

These are pretty much "clustered" together. The whole tour.. with all it stops shouldn't take more than a couple of hours.

Some of it is "uphill".. but not uncomfortable.

(I apologize in advance for this hi-jack)

Scubagirl - I just found out that my 80 yo dad may be joining us. Although he's in great shape, I'm not sure a walking tour in the heat is what we need to do and that's what we had originally planned. At this point, we don't even know which day we'll be in Nassau for sure with all the changed itinerarys. We get different answers from Carnival.

What would you recommend for us with a senior along? We've done the walking around Atlantis thing and can take him over there but that won't take long since it's so limited as to what you can see there without a pass. He likes tropical laid-back beaches if there's a bar and food. LOL I was thinking about the BCH for that.

Any other suggestions for good restaurants close to the port with good island food? What about the restaurants at Atlantis? Just overpriced resort food? We went to a bar at the marina outside of Atlantis. Is it called Hurricane Alley?

The bar you are thinking of is Green Parrot, I think.. at Hurricane Hole marina. It's still there.

There's another Green Parrot on the Nassau side by the bridges. a taxi ride. Kind of dead during the daytime..

You might enjoy the BC Hilton.. it has food and bar service on the beach or by the pool (the outside bar is closed these days).

You may want to do a little bit of history.. Rawson Square is nearby.. as is the slave museum. Nice to get a little of the culture/history while your in town.
